Acrylics on Canvas BoardAnd a tiny bit of explanation, as this is an illustration to a story that only exists in my brain.
Uther discovers that Merlin is a sorceror. Normally he wouldn't hesitate, but he knows how close Merlin is to Arthur, and it will be easier to take action when Arthur is out of the way. When Arthur rides off with a few knights to check out reports of bandit activity on the borders, Uther decides it's the ideal opportunity to drug Merlin so that he can't use magic, and then burn him at the stake. However Arthur's horse goes lame and he returns early...

I've often wondered what Arthur would do in a situation like this. It's a beautiful piece. I hope you will continue to be inspired for the Merlin/Arthur area as these depictions are intensely beautiful. And if you ever decide to sell prints keep me posted at myristica63@gmail.com I will definitely want to purchase some, especially this one and "Protector". Brilliant work.

Thank you. I've had a bit of a dry spell with Merlin, but I've recently gotten an idea that seems to have gotten me started again.

Fantastic. I'm actually inspired to take your idea into the written realm, I doubt I'll get far with it as it almost seems to be a borderline A/U with how to get them through the situation, but the idea is a great one for a story and this painting is extremely inspirational. You should consider writing it! If it inspired something of this much emotion, I bet it would be awesome! Much of your work for Merlin is exceptional, and being that I've only recently stumbled onto this gem of a Bromance show, I am still very new to it's story line. Cried like a baby at the very end. So it holds a special place in my heart. Love looking at your work!

Yeah, at the time I painted it the series was still only in its second of third season I think, so there was every possibility that it might actually happen on the show at some point. Alas it didn't. Still I'm so glad Arthur did get to find out the truth about Merlin in the last episode, even if it was INCREDIBLY sad.

It looks so realistic, it's almost hard to believe it's a painting with the amount of detail added and Arthur's facial expression is flawless.
I really wish we could have seen this scene in Merlin.

Yeah, it's painted in acrylics on canvas board, (I have the orginal in a frame on my stairwell).
I had a LOT of trouble finding a reference for the pose of the two of them. Finally a friend sent me an image of a fireman sculpture in...Germany, I think...and I could adjust that for the pose.

Yeah, it was. I think it was the first time I painted fire and actually got it to look like fire; bit of an epiphany moment, "Ahhhhh, I SEE, you do it like this..."

Your style reminds me of old 70's and 80's illustrations for classic novels. It's fantastic. I love how you tell a story with only one painting.
