also, if you shrink the image by 50%, it disappears. not sure what's the limit of shrinking before it's gone because i didnt try.
compressing the jpg will blur the watermark, but will still be there

I have a problem that instead of showing up when I select all, the invisible watermark disappears but I can see it perfectly when I don't have it selected. What am I doing wrong?

Great tutorial! I heard of this method and have seen a few tutorials for it, but yours is the first one that actually worked. Thanks so much!

Yatta !
I finally manage to make it work. Thanks for the tut.
A few point that I notice:
-You should do the whole process at the final size (e.g. do not resize your image afterwards)
- this only work when your image is display at its originale size on the screen (you should choose the option original size in DA and it only work in full view apparently)
- It does not seems to work on white background
Hope this help someone !

I've tried to do this many times, I'm using PS cs4, and following your steps exactly I can't get it to work at all.

It only works in Internet Explorer, so if you use Firefox or anything else other than IE it will not work.

Hey, what about invisible watermaking? DigiMarc or much cheaper SignMyImage? Both of them are designed to protect photo and thats the basic goal, right?

Maybe it's because I'm a noob with photoshop... but it won't let me invert the text layer. =/ Am I doing something wrong?

Anotheroutsider In reply to AeiriMuse [2008-10-28 12:20:06 +0000 UTC]
you have to rasterize it first. right click on the text layer, and rasterize it.
anyway, I also have some sort of problems. I followed every step as you said, but:
# the "invisible" watermark is very visible, in firefox and in IE as well. if i lower the opacity of the top layer [the copy of the background], the watermark is pretty visible, even at 97% opacity. if I don't lower it, the the image looks normal when i select it with ctrl+a, in IE and firefox as well.
# I use CS3 and the image is 1600x1200...
# your invisible watermark shows perfectly in IE, after I select the picture. mine definitely doesn't....

Fe-Da-Lesk-Barndt In reply to xDYSTHYMIAx [2011-03-02 21:37:17 +0000 UTC]
Here are some tips that may resolve the issues.
First steps- Make sure that when you make the pattern that you open your 2x2 pixel document with a WHITE background, not a transparent background.
Second steps- After you fill the middle Layer with the pattern you made(edit/fill/pattern);
Make sure that you set the blending mode to Exclusion. Once you select Exclusion, your pattern should look like a light gray layer. If it looks transparent, then you did it wrong.
After you create your text layer, right click the layer and select rasterize. This will allow you to Invert your text layer.
Highlight your text layer and type and hold down Ctrl+I to invert your text layer.
Then simply lower the Opacity on the top picture layer to your desired level. About 95-90 works well.
Save as Jpeg. Open image with Internet Explorer.
If your image is too large you must click it on the browser to zoom to actual size. This may obscure your perception and you will not see the hidden watermark.
To fix this, you must resize your image on Photoshop before you do any of the steps. Resize image to a suitable web image size and then proceed with the instructions on the tutorial. DO NOT resize image after doing the steps on tutorial, as this will corrupt the image and it will not work.
Hope this helps.

I am wondering what makes this display in IE and not in FF. Quite a discovery.

BloodyWing In reply to White-Dragon-Fang [2009-03-23 14:59:32 +0000 UTC]
If IE markes an image it overlays some kind of raster. FF and most of the other browsers online hilight the selected object.
Create a 2x2 px chessboard, save it as a pattern and create a new layer (mode:multiply) with the chessboard. You will see the same effect.

Hmm... I wonder, is there a way to do this with Paint Shop Pro 8? It would be great to be able to add invisible watermarks to my pics, but I don't have Photoshop, and I'm not allowed to download stuff off of the internet on this computer, so no gimp...

Excuse me, which photoshop is this? I'm using Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0. I'm on step 7, and I'm doing what's in that step. However, when I click on "image", I don't see anything called "Adjustments". That's why I'm wondering...

in Phototshop elements you can find the invert at LAYER>new adjustment layer>invert hope that helps

Thank you for this tutorial. I was happy to find it but unfortunately after hours of trying and reading your tut again and again I couldn't make any invisible watermark in a jpg-image, make to be visible in Internet Explorer. Maybe there was something I got wrong. For this reason I have some questions.
To point 2 paragraph 2:
Creating a text layer, does it mean create a real text layer or a normal rasterized image layer with text? Because I cannot invert a text layer (point 6 image adjustments). What colour should have the text?
To point 5 paragraph 2:
The layer for the pattern, should it be transparent or filled with any colour? I suppose without any filling you cannot see any applied layer style. In this case the pattern overlay. Or misunderstood I your words "fill it with the pattern you just created"? Does it mean go to the layer menu -->layer style and fill it....?
I hope you can make things more clear! Thanks for the help.
Lily

Rasterized text layer. The color of the text can be black or whatever color you choose, experiment around as some colors look better on some images. Go to Edit-->Fill to fill it with the pattern you just chose.

You have to be using Inernet Explorer or a browser based off of it, Firefox doesn't work with this.
