Description Daily Pokémon Doodle #131 ! Lapras has always been one of my favourite water-types, and this was a great chance to test out some water  painting techniques I saw in this tutorial:

Thank you very much! All credit where it's due to Doxy, I don't think I would have been able to pull it off without that tutorial, haha.

UNGH DUDE.......best lapras art i've seen!~ ;A; i REALLY like how the water is done just where lapras' body touches the surface of the water.~ what program do you use? (:

oddsocket In reply to edel-loop [2015-02-04 17:09:50 +0000 UTC]

Aww, thank you so much omg!! I'm glad you like it! I used Paint Tool SAI for this (and for like, 99% of my art in general). I'm a big fan of how blendy its brush tools are.

edel-loop In reply to oddsocket [2015-02-06 01:05:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah Paint Tool SAI is perfect for blending.~ ;3; *uses a mac laptop so can't use SAI anymore* I also particularly love the colours that are purposely not blended together (especially around Lapras' face) as it adds so much more depth to the picture itself. Every time I look back at this piece I find something new that makes me think "Wow I need to try practising something like that" (: I find that I can appreciate a piece more when it can make me think in that way. n_n

oddsocket In reply to edel-loop [2015-02-06 19:16:30 +0000 UTC]

Aw man, I forget about how Macs hate SAI. Why've they gotta be that way? What program do you use?

And thank you again! I figured not blending them would make the markings look more clear-cut and help it read better alongside the soft shading. I'm glad that it's given you some ideas for colouring as well (and quite flattered, haha)! I definitely agree though, I like finding artwork that makes me want to try out a technique the artist has used - there are a lot of things I do in my artwork that I've picked up that way from looking at other artists' work or watching streams.

Sorry for the late reply!
I use MangaStudio 5 so still getting the hang of it~ Except I find it a little bit hard to find really good tutorials on it. o-o

ABSOLUTELY~ >w< clear-cut definitely works better, I remember when I first started to colour digitally and I was like "BLEND EVERYTHING" xD Aw cool! Well you'll probably start to see me trying to pick up techniques that I see you using in your own artwork. n_n <3

Haha, it's fine, I can be a late replier myself sometimes!

Yeah, tutorials on MS5 are really tricky to find for some reason... The official site seems to have a decent share of video tutorials, though, if that helps any? (If you do find any good ones, feel free to pass them on to me, haha. I'm still getting to grips with it myself.)

Oh god yes, the BLEND ALL THE THINGS phase, haha. I did that as well - it was even worse in Photoshop when I discovered the Dodge and Burn tools, I used them to shade literally everything... xD I think anything like that - blending, dodge tools, all that stuff - is fine in moderation. Unfortunately moderation was something I never used them in, haha!

Ooh I'll definitely check out the official site!~ ^w^ I found a few good tutorials by this one guy. (: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGoqRr… He does a step by step guide for the program, he was actually the first guy I found online doing tutorials for it when I first bought manga studio so it was a great motivator. xD

Hahaha omg photoshop is a DEATH trap at the beginning for using the dodge and burn tools. It's always hard to draw the line where you should stop and not over-do a piece. ^^ Did you get photoshop online or buy it? (: *needs to find it somewhere* xD;

Ooh, thanks for the link! Those look really handy so I'll definitely be bookmarking them.

Isn't it though! With all those fancy brushes, dodge/burn, filters, gradient tools, the smudge brush... I don't think there was a single feature I didn't use and abuse back when I first started! xD I don't typically use full PS (I do have an old student copy of CS3 I got when I was at school, but my laptop is so crappy it can barely handle it half the time), I have a copy of Photoshop Elements which really does most things you need when it comes to drawing! I think it's only...Elements 7? It's a fairly old edition. But I don't think recent versions are too expensive if you shop around!

OMGOSH i'm terribly bad at replying on time. u///u

omg yes that smudge brush is EVIL. D: i'll most definitely shop around!~ ^^ thank you for all the wonderful advice by the way! <3 i started getting back into the pokemon fanart area again and i've been trying to follow your example of using bright colours and really trying to make them look more three dimensional and less flat. n_n

oddsocket In reply to KatieTheUmbreon [2014-11-01 20:16:57 +0000 UTC]

It's okay, converting digital techniques to traditional methods is often kinda tricky - don't feel discouraged just because the first try wasn't to your liking. With practice and a bit of trial and error you'll find ways that work for you. You'll get there, I believe in you!
