Maximilian is, in essence, Julian's very own creation. In his studies of trying to decode the origins and arcane properties of animate plants, he accidentally animated a fruit using a russet mold solution. None of the other samples animated, and he's not been able to work out what makes the little chap so very alive when the rest of the fruits just...rapidly decomposed, or did nothing at all.

The problem is that Julian's not really doing this project alone, as his studies are funded by his arcane academy. One of these days he's going to have to stop pretending he's got no outstanding obligations, and that one of those obligations is probably handing Maximilian over as a lab animal. Lab vegetable. Lab animal-slash-vegetable.

It's just....he's so attached to the little fellow. The idea of other wizards poking and prodding and (gods forbid maybe even) dissecting this charming, adorable, one-of-a-kind transmutational miracle? He can't fathom the idea, but also he needs to present some results of his latest experiments. What to do, what to do....

...for now, he'll just fuss the little chap and take pages upon pages of fascinated notes, and get swept up in adventures because repeated mortal peril in the name of protecting holy artifacts from malevolent usage is a most excellent distraction.
