Description 289 million years ago, in what will eventually become Oklahoma. A foot-long early reptile-Captorhinus, makes a leap of faith into a cavern to avoid the clamping jaws of a predatory Cacops- a kind of prehistoric amphibian. The Captorhinus detaches its tail as a distraction for the predator, it will grow back in time. This post was inspired by newly published fossilized skin thought to be from Captorhinus aguti. This is the earliest fossil skin we know of, from the Richard’s Spur Cave system in Oklahoma. Also thought this would be a good way to practice drawing stuff from the Permian, a period I love but don’t know a ton about!
