Description In the backswamp marshes of the Indian subcontinent, some 47 million years ago, a predator rests by the shore. This 3 meter long mammal resembles something akin to a furry crocodile but is in fact, an early whale- Ambulocetus. It lives much like the crocodilians it shares its habitat with, hunting fish and small mammals, but it is not the top of the food chain. Behind it, a giant serpent strikes from the shadows, coiling around the whale and consuming it tail first. This is the ruler of these wetlands, the giant madtsoiid snake Vasuki indicus. At over 40 feet long, it is one of the largest snakes of all time, comparable to the South American Titanoboa that slithers the Amazonian basin at this time. Vasuki cannot expand its jaws like its distant python relatives, instead slowly gnawing and chewing its prey down to size. The Ambulocetus must face a long and painful process before it can finally meet its demise in the snake’s stomach. Such is life under the rule of the King of Serpents.
