A horse-related accident over hurdles and an unfortunate event with a kitchen-standard meat cleaver lead to the unfortunate (and completely unlinked despite having happened only two years apart) deaths of the late Mr James Sharpe and Mrs Beatrice Sharpe of Allerdale Hall. Their 12 and 14-year-old children were left orphaned and then taken away to sort out their heads in some nice boarding schools or the like.
The old family estate was left to rot alone for several years, and it had already been in poor shape after the horse racing company went bankrupt during Mr James's days of poor investments, gambling and drinking. Some places don't take neglect well. It must've been something in the earth - the red clay soil of the grounds coloured the place crimson every winter.
Thomas and Lucille moved back to their family home as soon as they could. They re-employed Finlay, the old stable master, despite his obvious senility. Or perhaps because of it.
Instead of old-fashioned Victorian clothes in the year 1901 they have in the present resorted to using the clothes their parents wore in the 1970s. And the couch patterns as well. In search of funds and investments to their business, they have tried their best to search for better-off help. Edith, being the rich hipster girl starting her career as an author, doesn't think much about the siblings coming to her father in Buffalo, asking for partnership in starting the racing anew.
She thinks it's actually pretty awesome to see someone embracing retro so wholeheartedly. And being British is also really romantic.
