Description A walkthrough of how I did [link] for week 29 of

Okay so this is really more a guide of how to use GIMP than how to draw ponies. I'm still not that great at that, but I've learned a lot about GIMP so here this is.

I used [link] from as a color reference during this process.

You're welcome! I probably should do an updated guide on since this one is over a year old and my process has changed a lot since then.

Will use this as a reference. Hope to see more tutorials like this. Helps us GIMP noobs out some lol. Maybe a video sometime? That would be cool. If you do, make sure its detailed and not like most where they just say do this and that...does not help me none lol. Favorited!

Well I'm glad this helped you. Maybe I'll do more tutorials later when I learn more, just cause you asked. I've never considered a video, I wouldn't know how to do one that would be useful, really I tend to make it up as I go along.

And I just learned why everybody in the world seems to make smoother lines than I do.

Paths are a great tool since I use a mouse and suck with a tablet.

I do have one question. How does one change the color of the pathway stroke.

Ohfourmouse In reply to MrFahrenheit89 [2012-01-23 05:53:48 +0000 UTC]

When you stroke a path it will do it in whatever color you currently have selected, which is the color in the first box under the tools.

Really all I get is a black out line. Strange.

Try going to the drop down menu 'image' and then 'mode' to make sure in RGB mode, not in grayscale.

Patience and details - my nemeses. Nice tips though - it's good to see that someone else uses the same general strategy as I've tried to use when digitally coloring my hand-sketched work. It shows me that I'm not off base - I just need more practice and (as I mentioned) more patience and attention to smaller details. And big details. And overall composition. But I know that my theory is at least sound

I'm glad this helped you. Practice helps a great deal, just learning how to look at a picture and break it down to simple shapes took me a long time to learn. This is just how I figured out how to do this, mainly because I can't draw for anything on the computer.

i tried to do this, but i just cant, and frankly i would love to have my ponies look like those in the finished product.

Thank you, I would say to you is just to start looking at how the ponies are drawn on the show. Where the eyes, nose and ears fall (on the show the pony's faces are almost always drawn at only 2 angles). Pay attention to the proportions and the subtle curves in the body, legs and neck, it makes a huge difference. Honestly drawing is the hardest part for me. Once you got that, the rest comes later.

Get it I can draw ponies it's doing the computer editing I CANT do, which is what I want to do I'd make my ponies look more on the the show.

I still learning and tweaking how I work with GIMP. Some tips I can give you is to use a color guide or a vector to use for a color reference, getting the colors right goes a long way. The lines on the show are really thick, usually I make mine thinner than they would. I'm still trying to find a good balance with shading, not too little or too much for the style.

The best thing is just to try and try and try. I learned this all from trial and error, what works for me might not work for you.

The thing is, I can't get the outlining to be smooth looking as like a vector, and I havent yet found a way to do so. I have shading down, I know how to shade decently, it's the outlining that gets me.

Lining took me way too long to learn. Once I learned how to use paths in Gimp lining has been incredibly easier than just trying to do them by mouse.
