Description
I decided to show my progress in the form of a little tutorial, if you can't guess this is an amaterasu quad headStep 1: have a fursuit head that's all foamed AND EYES AND NOSE ON (our highly suggest having ato least your eyes and nose on, normally I'd have lips on it too, but I got lazy X3 oh well, it's fine) and you're gonna need some masking tape and scissors
Step 2: get your scissors and smaller strip of tape and go around the eye and nose, holding the tape near the area and cut arcs in the side of the tape until it wraps around the eye/nose properly, the way you want the fur will go around it, except the nose, you only need to go halfway around it
Step 3: time for the first layer of tape, I like to start from the bridge of the nose and go up and around, but it doesn't really matter, just make sure that your strips overlap a bit and go the same direction, and also pay close attention to the form, let the tape go where it naturally wants to, don't force it or you'll get the shape wrong, continue this until you have exactly one half of your head covered in tape, you don't need to tape the other half unless your fur pattern is asumetrical, work smarter not harder, you can flip the pattern for perfect symmetry
Step 4: go over the taped area with another layer of tape, putting it on in the opposing direction, say, you put the first layer on vertically, put the second on horizontally
Step 5: draw out your pattern, you can see what I did in pictures #2 and #3, I just found that that works best, you're welcome to experiment or follow what I did. Do not forget to draw your fur direction and add tick marks going through where the seams are, you will need to trace those on to your pieces of fur so you can get them exactly where the need to be
Step 6: cut out your pattern, I like to use scissors, but you can also use a razor blade, but I find that scissors cuts the foam head the least, and I like to cut it all out before taking pieces off
Step 7: take the pieces off and place them sticky side on scrap paper and cut them out, some may need to have "dart" like things cut into some of the bulging areas to make it lay flat, also on pieces where they touch the other side of the head, like the bridge of the nose, and the chin, you can, before cutting it out of the paper, you can flip it and trace it so you only need to cut out one piece. Do this correctly and you'll have something that looks like picture #4
Step 8: yay! You have your pattern made! Now go cut out your fur ^w^
