Why the /HELL/ would you go and poke some mysterious Egg? I mean, my first thing would be, either blow it up on sight or quickly RUN back to the ship and escape to earth watching my back. I wouldn't be like "EY, AN EGG, LET ME STAY HERE FOR 5 MINUTES AND INSPECT IT" Jeeeeesus christ..

I think the humans provoked the Aliens so they attacked. That's how I see it. The humans are the assholes to blame for the Aliens being so hostile.
