She's pretending for a week, and this is her second day. Why? To give moral support to her disabled girl friend? Because she thinks it'll be fun? Anyway, she has promised herself she cannot use her legs this week, except in an emergency.
Bethany is heading to their van from the lake shore, and has gotten caught in a drizzly rain shower. She's learning why some wheelchairs have knobby, off-road tires, as she fights to free her caster wheels from the mud.
If she were truly paralyzed, she'd either have to wait for help, or transfer off her chair and crawl in the mud, trying to pull her chair free and getting back into it.

We've had a boatload of rain in Brooklyn (NY) lately, helping me try to imagine what a wheelchair woman has had to deal with.
