He was a man among men. If the July 20 plot had succeeded, Rommel would (of course) have emerged, almost immediately IMHO, as the head of a military government and all fighting on the *Western* Front would have ended in a matter of days. (Eastern Front, another story).

Indeed a very interesting figure. It's a pity that he was forced to commit suicide by the Gestapo, I've always wondered what his role in the post-war Germany and the Bundeswehr would have been.
