Description Here's my homage to the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures #11 published by Archie Comics way back in 1990.  That issue featured Raphael in his iconic black costume corned by the Rat King and his legions of vermin (but thankfully no Vernon).  Jim Lawson did the artwork for that issue, which was okay but wasn't his best work back in those days (the colorist made some noticeable errors too).  The cover, on the other hand, is probably one of my favorite pieces of TMNT art ever, so kudos to Ken Mitchroney, Ryan Brown and Steve Lavigne, who are all credited with that job.

For my piece, I decided to put Splinter in Raphael's place and have him cornered by a horde of Mousers.  The "horde" didn't quite turn out, as I had trouble figuring out how to fit more than three into the frame without it getting really crowded.  Instead of including the Rat King's bandaged, grungy fingers, I went with Shredder's gauntlet.  I originally tried to draw it at a different angle more reflective of the original, but I could never get the angle right.  So that's why he's reaching in from the top corner of the piece.  Finally, I added some gradient shading around the edges to hopefully add to the dark and dreariness of the sewer setting.

Big shout-out to for not only allowing me to use his great, high-resolution TMNT logo, but for generously recoloring it to better match the original Archie comic cover.  Fun to go back and see how often the Archie covers changed around the colors on the classic TMNT logo.

Way cool! Looks very professional.

Hey, I'm trying to build a fan art folder in a group of mine. Would you mind if I sent you just a couple of submission requests? I would REALLY like to have this one and one other included in the gallery. It would mean a lot. Just let me know. Thanks.

I love this one!  It's a great homage and a great piece in its own right!

I credit you with recommending this idea.  If I remember, I gave you the choice of this TMNTA#11 homage or doing another classic Marvel Star Wars tribute.  I think this one worked out perfectly.  The original comic is one of my all-time favorite TMNT covers.  It's one of those rare pieces that shows a hero in peril and genuine distress, but it still has an innocent and even humorous vibe to it.

Well, you did a great job with it.  It definitely fits the tone of the mod and the Turtles in general.

That's cool. I love the use of that red-and-yellow kimono that Splinter appeared in for some of the contemporary promotional art.

Also fun to remember that Archie Splinter wasn't the tall, round-eared version that I recall the most strongly when thinking of that era.

Thanks for the comment!

My Splinter drawings are probably best described as imitating the Fred Wolf cartoon style but trying to infuse some of the expressive personality of the early Archie TMNTA comics. I'm glad you like the red and gold trim, as I also found the classic promotional art a neat way to have different takes on familiar characters.  This particular piece is also designed as a loading screen image for a PC mod of the Freedom Force vs. the Third Reich video game (still in progress!).  Check it out if you have the original game!

I like to think so!

The reason I became inspired to draw this is because it is intended to be a loading screen for a Splinter-focused level in Benton Grey's custom modification to the PC video game Freedom Force vs. the Third Reich:
