Here is the Athearn Hustler, a four-wheel switcher from the mid to late 1950s. Despite its age, there is a five-pole motor in there, and that transfers power to the wheels via rubber bands. This was the smallest model one could buy at the time. Believe it or not, this is based off of a prototype, the industrial diesel switchers from HK Porter.
