In my Video Game Republic fan ideas of the Star Trek universe, the Kazon Nistrim are one of the major enemies, while all the other Kazon sects are allies of the Federation and the Republic. The Kazon Nistrim even utilize ships from designs by other factions, including Klingon and Dominion ships.

Not only that, the Kazon Nistrim is not just a sect anymore; its technically an empire with a military presence that could overpower the military might of both the TOS and TNG era Klingons and Romulans (and the Cardassians and Dominion during the Dominion War).
