Looks sort of like the world of Blade Runner, only the robots have taken over from both humans and replicants.

That's one of the biggest flaws in going cyborg... loss of control.
Which reminds me that all those people willingly being chipped are going to have a very rude awakening one of these days given all the sociopaths pulling the strings. not to mention if something akin to Skynet becomes convinced of the folly of allowing human beings to exist.

I don't think the technology to actively hack the human brain like that exists yet. Unless you're thinking of thick collars that can inject psychotropic drugs or something anyway.

I'm personally of the mind that AI is already here and at the very least some clandestined developments involving human/machine interfacing has been in the works for years... how far military or corporate level operations have taken it is anyone's guess.

Oh, AI is real all right for one hell of a long time. Those robots they sent to Mars for example have AI. They have toor else they would be unable to make decisions of their own, since NASA can't monitor them in real time due to light speed lag. Their level of actual intelligence though is roughly equivalent to that of an insect.
What I doubt exists yet is human-level or better AI. I doubt that will come any time soon either. We don't even understand how human intelligence works yet... and without that understanding we couldn't possibly duplicate it. The old adage that computers are idiots that think at the speed of light is still true. It won't be forever probably, but i doubt that is changing soon as many people seem to think it will either.
When it comes though, we will know it well ell beforehand, and I am sure the designers of AI are no more interested in having machine overlords than the rest of us are and will take needed steps to keep it under proper control.

Better to have seen too many than too few in my opinion. I much prefer people who think aliens are secretly visiting us than those who think all out achievements in space are faked and that we're too dumb to actually launch satellites or the ISS and faked the Apollo missions. Those moon hoaxers almost literally make my blood boil.
