Bad news for the extremists who killed Charlie Hebdo, and good news for free speech...the comic depicting the Prophet Mohammad is going to be published anyway. I'm sure the subscription rates in France have skyrocketed since this attack in support of free speech and in support of everyone who was killed that day. So in other words, the guys who sought to silence this comic failed

Words can't be killed, if you cut the tongue of a man he will write, if you cut his hands he will write with his feet, if you cut his feet he will express with his eyes ... if you kill him he will talk with the million voices of free minded people reminding him and witnessing ...

My reflexion is not about the facts, but their roots.
Charlie Hebdo's people were thinking with their own brains, guys who killed them are not.

I've grown up with -between others- Cabu and Wolinski's vision of things, if I had only done with my parents and politicals and religious I would be quite intolerant, racist, homophobic ...

If the guys who did the crime had been educated (I mean taught to use their own brain, to build their own convictions, to make choices) it wouldn't have happened.
Mankind history is full of such consequences. german people in the 30' and 40' didn't think with their own brain, french people under Napoleon reign didn't, khmers didn't, ... too many examples ...
A very few moments there were societies which developped freewill and then harmony happened.

The cataclysm has to stop, mankind is going to disapear if it continues accepting finance and politicals and religious ideologies like if they were the only way ...
There are others, but for knowing them we need a critical mind.
Charlie's guys had a very critical mind, they helped a lot.

As a writer, I write what's on my mind. It's often social commentary on events. If it's controversial, them I know I did something right because I got people to think.
How could we even think about NOT thinking ourselves? Most democratic countries have free such to some extent. How dare ANYONE tries to take that away from creative minds and average citizens alike?
During the summer, when the war with Israel and Gaza reached rock bottom, I began a Watership Down-esque story with anthropomorphic animals paralleling Israelis and Palestinians. I wish I had better ideas because I felt that it has a lot to say about the situation in the Middle East at the time and now.
It goes the same way with satire. It's the most effective way (in my mind) to get people to think instead of being sheep. But how sad tat people are killed over a cartoon satirizing religion. How many times have are God and Jesus lampooned on cartoons?Family Guy depicting Jesus Christ working at a record store? Jesus Christ singing happy birthday to himself alone on a South Park Christmas special. That alone speaks volumes and does it in a funny, if not,, crude fashion. Laughing at something that should be touchy is a good way of looking at it through a different lens and realizing how ridiculous it is at times.
My favorite example of all time is “World War Zimmerman"

Its funny how something so fundamentally simple is so difficult to do.  At the end of the day we are social animals so it is natural to adopt the concepts of others and especially if they are believed collectively.  To think for oneself however, if important.  The mark of true intelligence and the first steps to genius.  I think there may be a few less problems with the human species if we all learned to think for ourselves just a little bit more.

I need this hanging over my front door so I can look at it each time I prepare to walk out and engage the world.

OlivierAccart In reply to arlyssray [2015-01-08 22:21:55 +0000 UTC]

We have to recall ourselves to ourselves, and we have to recall to do that ... not suprising it is so difficult.
Your remark about the collective believes (mainly fears, needs, hates, ...) our society continuously injects in us is very true, even each time we feel free we aren't, we are just taking a little bit of freedom for an instant.
The first fight would consist in growing our freewills and it's very hard.
Rebellion is a possible way, but we have just seen it can also lead to the very wrong way.
We have to try, in every instant, with everyone, everywhere, and try again, and again, like Charlie did.
