Description
So yeah it's been quite a while since I last drew one of these "realistic pokemon" things but I randomly had the thought of "huh Cofagrigus has four long limbs vaguely like a gibbon" and ended up making this. And then I thought "what if Sigilyph but it's Yi qi, that bat-winged dinosaur everyone was hyped about a while ago?". And so there's a Sigilyph too. And the ghost type here fits for Spooktober too. Anyways here's the info and stuff on em:Legends in the Unova region have long told of an ancient city set up by a legendary hero with a dragon pokemon, that thrived and peaked centuries ago but was ultimately abandoned and forgotten. For a long time it was uncertain whether this city was real, but there were also people who would claim to have entered its ruins and come across ghastly creatures that haunted them inside, said to be have sarcophagus for a main body and four shadowy limbs sprouting out that would pull tomb raiders into the sarcophagi and turn them into mummies. These creatures, like the city ruins they're said to inhabit, were also thought by many to be nothing more than myth, but a discovery in 2010 changed everything. In a remote part of the Great Unovan Desert the ruins of a large city, including a castle, were found to have been largely buried under the sand, confirming this ancient civilization was indeed real. When much of the ruins were uncovered and archeologists entered, they found more than just artefacts, but also that certain pokemon were living inside and some even evolved specifically to fit into their ruin habitat. One of these Pokémon was the sarcophagus creature thought to be fictional, named Cofagrigus.
Perhaps some people really did venture into these ruins long ago and caught glimpses of Cofagrigus, but under poor light conditions and shock from seeing man-sized creatures they didn't get the best look at this Pokémon. Cofagrigus was told to be a haunted coffin, with the spirit inside sticking out four arms, but closer inspection reveals it is actually a species of primate Pokémon, specifically a 'lesser ape', though standing 1.7-meters tall it is quite large for this group. The ancestors of Cofagrigus were likely forest Pokémon swinging in the treetops, but when desertification occurred a population of the gibbon Pokémon were forced to adapt and found refuge from the harsh desert sun within the walls of an abandoned city. Remarkably, Cofagrigus is highly specialized for its very specific habitat and has evolved patterns on its head and torso resembling those of the coffins found in the ruins and the fur on its torso even shines similarly to gold when light is shined upon it, an extremely niche form of mimicry. It is thought that the ape Pokémon sleep in some tomb chamber of the ruins and that their patterns are a sort of camouflage against predators, as Krookodile and Flygon occasionally wander into the ruins. This coffin mimicry likely sparked the idea that Cofagrigus was some sort of spirit-possessed sarcophagus and grave robbers who encountered them described them as such, claiming they are coffins containing souls of deceased people that attack intruding raiders and robbers.
Cofagrigus are not born having the elaborate blue and golden fur patterns. The juveniles have mainly pitch-black fur and skin, but an area of their facial skin around the eyes is red. These young Cofagrigus are highly playful and curious, especially about the many human artifacts in their human homes. Many seem to be particularly fond of old ceramic masks and they can often be seen carrying one (sometimes with their feet instead of hands). Due to this behavior, the young are called Yamask. Old tales also mention Yamask, claiming that Yamask are ghosts of long-dead people and that the masks they carry are the faces they had when alive, and that the red patterns around the eyes are tears of blood it has cried while reminiscing about the life it once lived.
Cofagrigus and Yamask are both notably more carnivorous than many other ape Pokémon and prey on smaller Pokémon that live in the ruins, which may be due to the low amount of plants they can access in the deep parts of the city ruins, though it seems than at night they may sometimes leave the ruins to forage elsewhere in the desert. A strange observation is that Cofagrigus and Yamask of all ages seem to be carriers of a non-lethal but highly contagious disease that affects other Pokémon and is spread via contact, and this disease suppresses the abilities of infected Pokémon. Rumored by some to be a "mummy's curse", it seems to wear off quite easily and infected Pokémon can be cured simply by entering a Pokeball, perhaps something about the man-made objects kills the vectors quickly. Entering Pokeballs doesn't cure Yamask Or Cofagrigus though, which seem to permanently have it but aren't affected by it, and they serve as super spreaders that infect others, and the newly-infected can go on to infect more still. While the "mummy's curse disease" carried by these Pokémon usually suppresses ability, some Pokémon seem to be affected differently. For example Slakoth and Slaking are noticeable more active and aggressive when infected, loafing around much less, and some trainers are known to take advantage of this to make their Slaking into even more powerful battlers.
The ruined Relic Castle of Unova is also home to other Pokémon found not much elsewhere. Sigilyph are flying creatures that tend to patrol the skies above the desert surrounding the ruins, but it appears they roost within its walls at night. While it may appear to be a bird, the bat-like wings reveal it is something else. Sigilyph is actually a non-avian dinosaur Pokémon of the Scansoriopterygidae family, which are not true birds but are quite closely related. While birds have wings of feathers for flight, Sigilyph and its kin have skin membranes between their arms and fingers forming bat-like wings instead, and in Sigilyph this membrane is almost transparent. The rest of the body is quite brightly-colored though, and the animal even has four long tail plumes for display. Sigilyph have been known to exist for a long time, with people knowing about it since way before the Relic Castle was discovered, but only recently was it found that the areas it flies above have an abandoned city buried below. These Pokémon fly along the same path every day as they patrol for prey below, but the discovery of the ruins has led some to believe they follow one specific trail not just for hunting. A theory has been proposed that the Sigilyph living around the ruins are descendants of individuals that were domesticated by the city's inhabitants to serve as guard animals and taught to follow that trail to scan for invaders, and that even after the people left the Avianoid Pokémon continued to do as their masters taught them, and went on to teach their offspring the same such that the entire population here still does so. Archeological expeditions have found evidence that Sigilyph was indeed domesticated by the city's residents over 2,500 years ago as guards, suggesting this may actually be true to some extent.
