OpenStep and NeXTSTEP were great. They live on in macOS, iOS, tvOS, and watchOS.

True! Among other remarkable stuff, the original Doom game was developed on a NeXT and the first web page ever was served from a NeXT computer by Berners-Lee himself

When I was at university as a student (about almost 20 years ago) one of the computer rooms at the campus were composed by Linux machines, and they had a similar window interface (DEC 3000-300LX machines) ^^
The other rooms had Windows NT 4.0 (486/Pentium PC machines) and MacOS (I don't remember if it was System 7 or MacOS 8) with At Ease interface (Mac Quadra Performa 630 machines)

Has been merged with Mac OS since the purchase of NeXT by Apple in December 1996 and Steve Jobs came back at the same time, as it had left Apple in September 1985 and founded NeXT shortly after ...
NextStep (actually OpenStep since version 4.0 since the Sun Microsystem agreement) became Rhapsody Developer Release 1 and the 2 (Codename of Mac OS X Server 1.0) and then Mac OS X Server 1.0 and then Mac OS X Beta, Mac OS X Public Beta and finally Mac OS X !

Mac OS X took over elements of OpenStep like the Dock (to the right of the image) for example !

OpenStep/Mac OS is now : Mac OS X !
