Mothra (モスラ Mosura) is a giant divine moth kaiju who is alluded to in the 2018 animated Godzilla film GODZILLA: City on the Edge of Battle and goes on to indirectly appear through a vision in the film's sequel, GODZILLA: The Planet Eater. She is known to have at least three ancestors in this continuity, two of which exist offscreen and the third of which is chronicled in GODZILLA: Project Mechagodzilla, a prequel novel to City on the Edge of Battle.
A benevolent kaiju that inhabited the Amazon rainforest, Mothra awakened after her counterpart Battra had already emerged in response to the oncoming Gorath asteroid and met his end at the hands of Godzilla. Mothra appeared to defend the last remnants of the United Earth when Godzilla attacked them at their last bastion in Buenaventura, successfully forcing him to withdraw. Mothra then worked with the survivors to transport her eggs to the former Japan where they could defend future generations and ensure mankind's survival. Mothra lost her life to Godzilla while fighting to ensure the success of "Operation: Cradle."
Sometime later after the eggs were successfully transplanted, they hatched and the hatchlings tried to defeat Godzilla. However, both fell, with one Mothra's carcass crashing into a volcanic caldera where it decomposed and left behind one last egg. The Houtua, descendants of the humans who had sought refuge with Mothra's eggs, built a temple and underground civilization around this egg, which they continued to worship nearly 20,000 years after "Operation: Cradle." The last Mothra inside the egg was called upon to reach Haruo Sakaki inside a vision to free him from Metphies' influence so he could find a way to stop Ghidorah.
