18/06/1982 HMS Illustrious heads towards the mouth of the Tyne, she was commissioned two days later at sea en-route to Portsmouth.Note the black paint on the funnels and masts has been overpainted Grey.

Were the funnels painted grey because she was en-route to the Falkland Islands to relieve HMS Invincible? Perhaps to give a less defined visual definition in a recent war zone. If so why have the tops of the funnels painted black at all?

Yes the tops of the masts and funnels were painted grey because she was going to Β the falklands.
It could be painted black for cosmetic reasons because of the gases ?Β
