Nice that the breech is still there. Usually it's missing or welded shut.

Interesting. The Mk 23 was a modern high elevation long range weapon, replacing the earlier Mk VII. It was mounted in a gun housing that looked a bit like a turret. Was the emplacement originally for a Mk 23?

The Gun was acquired by English Heritage in 1993, MK 23 6inch BL Coastal Artillery Gun.
There has been an emplacement on the site from before WW1 but i do not know if the one that remains was built for the MK23, but i think English Heritage would get the correct one.Β

Possibly but possibly not. Any coast artillery weapon is very hard to get. Often it is good enough to get something close in an emplacement to allow interpretation on some level. Pendennis Castle has a proving ground mount in an emplacement instead of a service weapon. A 3.7 inch AA carriage at Dover Castle has a 105mm light gun barrel (It took me a few minutes to figure out what was wrong, 3.7 inch guns didn't have muzzle breaks).

The same goes in the USA. Fort Casey in Washington State has a pair of 10 inch Disappearing Carriage (DC) guns. These were recovered from Fort Wint in Subic Bay. They are in 10 inch DC emplacements, but of a different model. They don't fit correctly, but they add hugely to the site.Β Β

In any case great photo and its good to see a gun in that position!
