Description
Art is ©WingedHippocampus Please do not trace, recolor, or make bases from this work. Delphinus the Spinner Dolphin is ©Nikki-Nicole-P
Vorago and Delphinus meeting for the first time.
This was partially inked in SAI, partially inked in GIMP. I think the combo method worked pretty well here and I may just start program-hopping.
I think I like Vorago better without the middle head fin. But that means I have to go back and change the past art because those are supposed to be refs. TT_TT

I recently got myself a Sai program, and seriously after looking at this piece I'm glad to have done so
As for the work itself, I'm always happy to see something original. And somehow it shows your own personal evolution from your fan art days. Incorporating looks and aesthetics you like to form a new world. I won't go far as to pass this kind of judgement thought. It may look whimsical but it shares a lot of science fantasy elements that have always been known through out your fan art.
The best example is if you look at this picture on the gallery alone. It had a very heavenly feel with the water looking like space and the "bubble" appearing more like a planet. Seeing it close up we can see that its more aquatic and with water based deities. This parallel makes me think of Lovecraft in a lot of ways. The endless heavens of space is no different than the endless abyss of the oceans. The way sea life floats through water is how many people interpret spirits floating through an ether. And their appearance looks so alien and yet hypnotic. It really makes the characters have this presence that makes me really want to learn more.
The design is very interesting as well. Smooth and rounded lines with minimal sharp edges show where you came from in sci-fi, everything looks clean and comes off as a place of higher intellect. Color is also complimented as every color is vibrant and pops with personality. What we can tell from the one outside the bubble he's purple with royalty with green and silver to accent his heritage from an unknown kingdom. Him being outside of the bubble shows his maturity and that he is an alpha. The antenna is also a nice touch as it reminds me of an angler fish as he looks dangerous and yet very hypnotic in his beauty. Another layer I like since most fish are asexual, but the angler fish we know of are female, giving sort of like a duality of power and beauty. Than we have the youth in the bubble. To me this reminds me of fish eggs and how they swim with life before their world gets much larger. The color reminds me of a dolphin or a shark. Giving off that need to be dominant and powerful without saying much, adding sharp points in key areas like his hair and his arms. But since he is now in a bubble it makes me think he needs time to mature and to understand where his battles should be targeted. And since all sea life never sleep this is a lesson they must learn.
Now for the scene itself. I find this very fascinating because it looks like a classic everyman and oppression. The bubble represents the world view of the everyman while the ruler who thinks he is outside said bubble can do what he wants to the man inside. The shade of purple on the outer rim is also fascinating as it shows the rulers influence creeping closer and therefore making the grudge between the two more personal. We also see how dark this image is as we can see they are at deep depths, and angler fish can never be touched as they can just retreat to where they can be safe. But here is the mistake, bubbles aren't invincible. Eventually they will pop and the order he rules over will also fall.
I assume Vorago is the angler. And if that is right I can understand why you removed the center head fin. I think it worked out and all the elements matched up well with each other. And honestly you don't need to go back and fix anything. Its called concept art for a reason and it can only get better XD

Sai has been very fun to work with, I love how I can make natural, hand-drawn lines with it! I'm just not very good at coloring with it, and any long lines still need tools that I find Gimp stronger for. So, it seems both are needed to get my best work out of me.
I do like Lovecraft, though like him I'm more than a little terrified of the ocean. Especially since I know what scary things are in the darkest parts of it, deep sea fish are the stuff of nightmares. But even so, there's a sort of beauty in it, I think. I'm kind of fascinated with it.
Vorago is indeed the deep sea fish there. He is the Grand High Glyphal, a position that basically translates to royal sorcerer, the most powerful magic user of his kind. He is second only to his Queen in power and influence. He is very interested in novel things, and for him, an air-breathing surface-dweller like the dolphin prince there is definitely a novelty. I am not so sure the prince is happy about the situation, though. He was not asked about any of this and was basically kidnapped. He had better hope the bubble doesn't pop, the pressure around him will crush him and just like a normal dolphin, he still needs air...they're too far down for him to ever reach the surface from here.
Thank you, you make very interesting comments and it's fun to see how others see the work.

Well glad I can give you a happy with my opinions. Again, these are made to be unbiased and meant to judge your work based on your own standards. judging it based on my own tastes will not help. But as an outside viewer I really enjoyed this and look forward to more.
And its okay, a deep one won't come to take you away *huggles*
But I love your views of your own work, it somehow really makes it seem much more vast. Such as the ocean itself. You have a beautiful imagination so please keep going with this weird alien beauty XD

Wow this one is gorgeous! I hadn't really forseen the scale differences between 'em so it's also a little shocking but you definitely make the characters play off each other in interesting ways. The lights twinkling through Vorago's tail are a particularly gorgeous touch. Whole thing is really beautifully colored, I love it!

Thanks so much, I've been trying hard to smooth things out and achieve some kind of harmony between lining tools!
Ahh, these kinds of opposite characters are so much fun. Vorago's cool to Delphinus's royal fire there. c:

I agree, Vorago's design does indeed seem to work better sans middle-head fin; sorry for creating more work for you, though. X3;
This whole pic is pretty great, though. For one thing I just love the composition; the way Delphinus' bubble hangs in the center of the pic with Vorago's tail curling around it is really well-done and makes the image flow very nicely, as well as put a nice focus on the dynamic of the two characters. Which itself is another strong suit here: Vorago's calm little smile (smirk? x3) in contrast to Delphinus' angry little scowl creates an immediately-engaging dynamic, and you further highlight it by nicely emphasizing the difference in size between them. Add on top of that your usual strong suits of crisp, clear lines and spetacular coloring, rendering, and lighting effects (the look of Vorago's veils is especially wonderful here), and it creates an immediately striking, compelling scene that I just love. Definitely hoping we see more of these two together. <3

Nikki once called Vorago Smugfish. 8D Yeah, Vorago's all calm and curious and vaguely threatening and poor little Del is in a very dangerous situation...
He he, well, we're playing, so we'll see. Thanks as always, Goji!

Sai is a DREAM for detail work. Hands, eyelashes, face shapes, clothing details. It's not so good at continuous or sinuous lines, though, it gets all hairy and wobbly. Gimp, on the other hand, is great for that, but stinks at details. It goes all pixellated and even wobblier than Sai (it outright jitters if I try to stay in place, GIMP LAY OFF THE CAFFEINE) and I've never gotten it to play nice with my pressure sensitivity. But together, I think I can get the best of both worlds!
Delphinus is not too happy about being kidnapped and stuffed into a magic bubble and then dragged down where there's no air and crushing pressure even he escaped said bubble, no.
Mmm, hair. c: It's relaxing to draw. Pain in the butt for flats, but worth it. Thanks!
