Description
One of my portfoilo class assignments was to come up with four iPod ads using similar character elements in Photoshop. Conveniently for me, the Jhonen Vasquez cartoon "Invader Zim" on Nickelodeon has four primary characters...Can't say enough how happy I am with how these turned out! This one features the alien Zim himself.

Ha ha. That's awesome. You did a good job capturing the look and feel of the iPod ad campaign. Great choice for characters, since Zim has a very distinctive and enjoyable silhouette. Might consider making the eyes completely black, or else if you'd like to have them a different color than the rest, make it very distinctive and pop out of the page.

Thanks for the critique! All valid points. The reason for my choice in handling the characters the way I did is that in true iPod ads, the silhouette is not completely black, actually. There is some visual detail that remains in the form. Occasionally Apple will even strike out the most prominent remaining details as negative space to heighten visual interest. So I wasn't allowed to simply make solid black silhouettes and had to solve the problem another way.
Since I had a 2-dimensional character I was "iPodizing," the negative space detailing looked bad or made the silhouette look stencil-y. So I went with a not quite all-concealing black mask to mostly silhouette the character and allowed the most recgnizable identifying elements in the "Invader Zim' characters to show through even more to help keep a stronger identity without resorting to the "black shadow" approach. In everyone but Gaz's case, it was their eyes (for her I used her skull pendant).

Awesome stuff Mell.
Of course you may hate me for this but I still have yet to finish the Invader Zim box set you got me for Christmas a few years back. To be honest towered the end of the series it kinda starts to creep me out. Really I have no idea why either. It was the same with Ren & Stimpy too.
