It seems to me like Red just caught Mewtwo and tries to train him but he has a hard time controlling his temper.

I used to always have such difficulty trying to catch Mewtwo in R/B/Y, but there was one rare instance in which my Articuno used Ice Beam and instantly froze Mewtwo, then I caught it with a single Poke Ball.

You didn't save your Master Ball? That made the battle super easy.
Step One: Don't bother to damage him. Throw Master Ball.
Step Two: Name him something cool, like Apocalypse.
