This one took a minute! Dash was one of the hardest to redesign, and hardest to give a backstory to. She was always one of my favorites, so I wanted to do this well. But lets face it, at the end of the day I'm drawing and writing about pastel ponies.
A few things about the Switchverse here! Pegasi have markings down their back legs much like unicorns have markings on their chests. Unicorns are born with their marks, while pegasi get theirs when they get their cutie marks. Each is tied to their keeping of magic. While unicorns have magic at their cores, in their hearts. Pegasi carry their magic like muscle, like in their very powerful hind legs. This gives them the power of flight.
Pegasi also keep their hair short. Longer hair can complicate flying. Some pegasi believe hair carries memories and cut it frequently to show their freedom. Some like the style. In this instance, Rainbow is confined by Wonderbolt regulations to have short hair for speed and uniformity.
Also Rainbow Dash is gay in this AU and she and Fluttershy are together! So yay, gay rights.

Edit: I changed her design and some of her coloring! I liked the idea of her hind leg markings being more weather related! I also decided that while I'm working out the final time-line for my AU, I wanted to rewrite the back stories for the mane 6!
