Hello and thanks for the lovely comment.

I usually start with a very loose drawing just to place all the relevant details. I then add in just a little shading using an HB pencil, keeping it light. Remember that the harder the pencil the more chance there is that it may mark the paper.

Using a 2B I then start to mark in some of the darker areas, defining where the shadows go. From there I would normally start using a 4B and then alternate with a 6B to refine the areas of shadow. I almost always work from dark to light as it is really difficult to lighten work that has been shaded.

It's really now just a matter of adding successive layers of graphite. If I need to define an area more I will sometimes go back to my HB and use it as a smudge stick, evening out the graphite to darken an area (Never use the point of the graphite, always keep it slightly on it's side to develop a nice flattish area to draw with). The best advice I can give is keep your touch light and don't rush to get a result. I often leave a drawing standing up somewhere so that I can look at it over a few days...it's amazing how many little things you find that need refining. Once you are satisfied spray with workable fixative as there is nothing worse than finding a smudge mark on a favourite piece.
