Empoleon (Ancient Kalos Form)
Hegemonic Pokemon
Type: Water / Ghost
Signature Move: Royal Tempest [Ghost type; Special; Power: 80; Accuracy: 100] (The user creates a disastrous storm of paranormal and aquatic energy. Summons rain after use.)
Recorded to have first appeared right after the great Kalos war, this form of Empoleon is capable of using phantasmic powers. It is believed that this Pokemon shares its body with a deceased soul of an ancient general – the strongest are even said to harness the soul of an ancient king. It produces an ectoplasmic mixture of water with very high viscosity, which causes immediate choking when engulfed by it. Unlike the Empoleon of the current times, this Kalosean form has a very reckless personality, and will not hesitate to risk the welfare of those around it for its own gain.

Continuing on with the starters for a hypothetical PLA-style Kalos game! With all the mentions of ancient kings and AZ in Kalos, I just knew that Empoleon would be the perfect fit for a region like this.
This is honestly a very self-indulgent design since Empoleon is my favorite starter Pokemon. There is not much reasoning behind the Ghost typing beyond the basic “many people would have died in the Kalos war, so some of them could probably possess a Pokemon” and the aesthetic value.
Some general notes on the design:
- The head being surrounded by energy is supposed to evoke the stereotypical “skull floating in flames” image. It also makes a shape of both a beard and long, flowing hair, which were common for medieval royalty.
- The brown armor, which replaces the steel blades, are shaped like shackles, as I feel like ancient people would be more wary of superstitious Pokemon like this. Obviously these are supposed to be natural features though, not artificial.
- And my favorite aspect, the flow of energy on the back is shaped to be like a royal cape.
