The end came shockingly quickly for the youngster.

Raye stayed on the arm and jerked it again. Makayla tried to wrench herself free but that only allowed Raye to step over the arm and drive Makayla face first to the mat.

Raye sat down on the shoulder and pulled the limb up between her legs, trapping it painfully.

When Raye slid her leg around Makayla’s head the match was essentially over. Makayla had mounted no offense and only a little more defense.

The submission was meek and Diane tapped Raye on the shoulder but Raye already knew and began to release her charge.

“You ok?” Raye asked.

Makayla just nodded.

“Do you want to do this or not?” Raye asked her in a not polite tone. She needed to know if Makayla was serious or if Raye was just wasting time.

“Yes… but… Im just not good at it.”

“Listen there are going to be matches where you feel you just don’t match up.” Raye said as she sat down beside her. “You cant just not try. You have to get in there and have a go at it.”

“But I’ve been on the mat with you a lot and I never get anywhere.   You are just too good for me. I cant keep up with you.”

“It happens sometimes.   You think I liked getting in with Allison? Or Laura? And look what Vikki did to me. I got rolled. But I didn’t think I wasn’t going to win. I knew I was.   Until I wasn’t. Commit to it and give it hell.”

Makayla put her head down and nodded.

“And Im going to be right her helping you and making you learn. Im not the greatest teacher, I know that, but together we are going to get you some wins.   And so is Devon. And Kaitlyn. We are a team and we are going to all get better. But only if you are willing to put in the effort and not just quit before a match starts.   So you knew what I could do. Big deal.   You should have been thinking about defending that instead of being scared.   But we will get you over that hump too. Deal?”

Raye held out her hand.

Makayla clasped it and they helped each other up.

“Tomorrow we get back to work, ok?’

“Ok, it's a deal.” Makayla said.   It was some tough love but Makayla was determined to listen to what she’d said.

They began to leave when Diane interjected.

“Hold on. The winner by submission…. The Swedish Sensation… Raye Larsson!”

“You just couldn’t let this one go could you?” Raye asked.

“Nope. Not my thing.”
