Description The Redcap is the worst the Gnome race has to offer. A vengeful, cruel, and long lived murderer and sapper of souls. Considered to be a legendary evil spirit, the Redcaps are an ever-living cult that slay human children, in retaliation for their(Humans) destruction of the wildwood, and to serve their dark rituals. Defilers, feasters of flesh, drinkers of blood, and sappers of souls. The cruel Red Cap is a creature described to the children of westfolk to frighten them into obedience, yet they are very much real.
Though their slayings are infrequent, at any point a child could awaken to the hideous drooping and haggard appearance of a Redcap standing over them, wielding a razor sharp axe, polearm, or scythe-blade, the red cap uses his magic abilities to paralyze or put their victims to sleep, and then drag them off into their underground cult lairs, scattered with the remains of their previous victims.
From there the victims are defiled, tortured, mutilated, consumed, and fashioned into grisly trophies.
Despite their diminutive size(Standing between 2 and 2 1/2 feet) they possess a disproportionate strength due to the dark rituals they've used to strengthen and prolong their existence.
With the years the become less and less like their mortal selves, becoming corrupted by dark magic, though they speak, they also emit inhuman shrieks that sound more supernatural than mortal.  sta.sh/0w1n8u19rex

The Gnome Redcap is based off of well, the Redcap, a supernatural creature in Scottish folklore:   en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redcap
The redcap (or Redcap) is a type of malevolent, murderous goblin  found in Border folklore . He is said to inhabit ruined castles along the Anglo-Scottish border , especially those places that were once the scenes of tyranny or wicked deeds, and is known for soaking his cap in the blood of his victims.[1] [2]  He is also known as Redcomb and Bloody Cap.[1] ;

Redcap is depicted as "a short, thickset old man with long prominent teeth, skinny fingers armed with talons like eagles, large eyes of a fiery red colour, grisly hair streaming down his shoulders, iron boots , a pikestaff  in his left hand, and a red cap on his head.[1] [2]  When travellers take refuge in his lair he will fling huge stones at them, and if he kills them he will soak his cap in their blood, giving it a crimson hue. However, he may be driven away by repeating words of Scripture  or holding up the cross . He will then utter a dismal yell and vanish in flames, leaving behind him a large tooth on the spot where he was last seen.[1] [2]  Other than these measures, human strength will do very little in overcoming him.[2]

According to the 19th-century folklorist William Henderson, the dunter or powrie is distinct from the redcap. Like the redcap he inhabits old Border forts, castles and peel towers , but their main activity is to make a noise like the beating of flax or the grinding of barley in a hollow stone quern . If this sound goes on longer or louder than usual then it is considered an omen of death or misfortune. Popular tradition states that these Border castles were built by the Picts  who bathed the foundation stones in human blood which often resulted in such hauntings.[3] [4]  The suggestion is that dunters and redcaps may be the spirits of the original foundation sacrifices .[4]

How horrible was the destruction of the wildwood for the gnomes and other inhabitants of the wildwood that a cult like this sprang up?

It's definitely one of the darker chapters in Westwall's history, though the Redcaps can't place all the blame on the Westfolk, as both sides sealed the region's demise. Moreso the Redcaps merely use that as an excuse for their wicked deeds and selfishness/desire for endless life.
