Been a fan for 19 years now and even through all the changes, I still love the hell out of the blue blur. Sure, some of his games have sucked *cough*Sonic 06 Heroes*cough* but on the whole they've been a steady bunch of enjoyable games. Even if Riders makes me want to throw controllers and flip tables. Oh, I see where you're coming from.
For years, and years, Sonic fan purists have condemned any new Sonic game that doesn't scroll from left to right, (and even the ones that do) and begged for Sega to make a new simplistic, back-to-basics, 2D, side-scrolling Sonic game, with no cinama scenes, no other characters, (I miss playing as Tails, Knuckles, and even Amy personally) a simple story, and gamplay ellements, and the badnik robots from the original games to return.
And what happens when they finally do?... Complain even more, and criticize & complain about everything about the game, because it's not 100% what they were expecting.
(Even though it's not out yet, and nobody's even played it themselves yet.)
I think a majority of Sonic fans will never be pleased, no matter what honestly.
At this point, I'm surprised people arn't making simular complaints about "New Super Mario Bros. Wii." Could you just imagine what that would be like?

Basically Mario can do no wrong, because he's video game Jesus for some reason.
Yet when Sonic tries it, or god forbid Sega actually tries something new and exciting it's me with severe backlash.
This is basically why I just play video games I like and don't get involved in any sort of "fan base" or anything.

I guess, I don't blame you, the Sonic internet fanbase is so divided up in so many ways, and older fans are always bad-mouthing the series, it's tarrible.
(But I admit, I've met quite a few "sane" Sonic fans on DA lucklly.)
Mario did help save the VG industry from the "video game market crash of '84" (google it) so in a way he did help save it.
I love Mario, but even I will admit he has had his own share of bad/mediocre games.

Yeah, and that's not even the worst of them, again I just stick to enjoying things I like and leave the "fans" to themselves.
What gets me most is the number of these guys who disregard the games completely and go off of the old Saturday morning cartoon and the old comics for what ever reason.
It's like if I called myself a Street Fighter fan but only liked the infamous American cartoon and completely disregarded the fighting games. It just don't add up.
And yeah, I know all about the first video game crash, I often compare it to the current state of the video game industry. It's eerily similar.
Mario may have saved us back then, but that's no reason to praise Super Mario Galaxy 2 for being a 3 year old game running on 9 year old hardware.

I love the old Sonic SatAM cartoon, but I don't use it as the basis for the entire Sonic series.
I enjoy the newer Sonic games, and comics regardless of them not being 100% like the old games/cartoons.
I think some people just live in the past to much. (And yet, why arn't they happy about Sonic 4?)
And let's not bash Super Mario Galaxy 2, or the Wii please...
I actually am a fan of both of those things personally.
(SMG2 is actually onley a few months old, it's still a new game.)
Also, bashing the Wii for not being as powerfull as the other game systems is like bashing the Sega Genesis because it's not as powerfull as the SuperNES, or something.

Oh no, I'm not one of those console fan-boys or anything, I actually love the Wii. I'm just stating a fact. It's got 3 year old models running on a 3 year old engine (SMG1 graphics and gameplay engine) being played on 9 year old hardware.
Weather it's good or not isn't in question, I'm just saying that NO other game could get away with being, quite literally a rehash/glorified expansion pack, and still be critically acclaimed.
It's only getting such notoriety BECAUSE it's Mario.

It's kinda unfair to call it (SMG2, right?) a rehash/expansion pack.
The onley thing that really felt rehashed to me was all of Mario's moves & play control, wich isn't a bad thing, IMO.
Regardless of that, I felt it was a well-made game overall, (especially for a sequal) and the levels looked more unique/creative to me then the first game.
(Though, I haven't played much of the first game, having just got a Wii a year ago.)
I kinda disagree that Mario's over-glorified. (I always liked the li'l guy personally.)
Not all of the Mario games get "critically acclaimed."
The GameCube games "Luigi's Mansion," and "Super Mario Sunshine" both have had a "Sonic Heroes"-style "love 'em or hate 'em" reputation, and they both tend to get bashed by both fans & critics sometimes on the internet as a result. (Though, I thought both games were pretty good personally.)
I think overall Mario fans are just easier to please then Sonic fans.
I do hear the Sonic games do sell well regardless of the internet & critical backlash, (even his comic series by Archie is still going strong) so I think there is still hope for the blue blur.

I'm not saying it wasn't enjoyable, but realistically speaking it has the same graphics and game play engine, just with some new mechanics. It's literally an expansion pack being sold as a full game, and fun or not, it doesn't deserve the "10/10" "Game of the year" praise.
I will agree 100% about Mansion and Sunshine, but again, that was 7 to 9 years ago when those came out. Games were looked at differently then, the entire industry changed. I loved them both though, still do. Luigi's Mansion, though short and too easy, was especially awesome in concept. a Kiddie survival horror game? That's hilarious.
I don't honestly think it's about "fans" and who's easy to please. It seems like anymore to reviewers, "gamers", and general internet users that "Mario" is synonymous with "Good" while "Sonic" is synonymous with "Bad". Both are inaccurate, well basically everyone should just be able to enjoy whatever they any without fear of negative stigmata from people they don't even know.
And yes, anything Sonic STILL sells like hotcakes. Even the 2006 "Sonic The Hedgehog" went platinum on the 360.

At first I thought this was a zealous assertion that all the poorly-rated, poorly-made Sonic games Sonic Team has cranked out since Sonic Adventure 1 really weren't so bad.
Then I saw this was about Sonic 4, made by a company that actually knows what they're doing sometimes (Dimps) and that features some classic Sonic gameplay (platforming with occasional speed). So I'm okay with it.

I think the game looks awesome anyway and I'm gonna play it no matter what rank it gets. People are just being a bit to childish these days. Sure the game have some few flaws but they still don't have to judge it to harsly, they have to give this game a chance dammit, SEGA listened to us after all.

I don't actually care too much about Sonic's "new look." It's like saying Mario isn't as fat these days and since his overall/shirt color is different it's RUINED. FOREVER.
The game has failed to fall into the typical pitfalls of the "Sonic Cycle" so I'm refraining judgment until I can, you know, play the game in an unbiased light.
