Description For a very special friend

My best work yet, imo. Took roughly 20 hours, which is actually very quick considering all that fur D< Reference picture supplied by the wonderful Go and check out his gallery, it's great! Here's the direct link to the original photo: [link]

Program: Photoshop CS2
Time: 20 hours give or take some

P.S. There seem to be some flaws with the shaded areas that show up on lighter monitors, but my monitor is slightly darker than most, so I apologise; I can't really fix it because I can't see it.

I can't remember if I commented on this or not, but I'll do it again if I must, WONDERFUL job!

Just great.

Rhesus monkeys always make me sad though, because they are used largely in scientific research :/

I wrote a poem about monkeys/baboons in research facilities.

Sadness aside, great job

Oooooooooh.... *stares at monkey in wonderment* I thought this was a photo at first! *round of applause!* awesome work! I can sympathise with the dark monitor thing, however much I fiddle with the settings on mine it's always lighter than others! So my dark gloomy work tends to look almost plain black on other people's XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Onionpie In reply to dibbuns [2008-10-27 19:41:15 +0000 UTC]

aw, thanks And boy, that sucks D: Frigging monitors, screwing up our artwork D< It's annoying having a dark monitor, too, 'cause I get the opposite -- when someone does a gloomy, atmospheric picture I see NOTHING LOL. And everyone's like "oooh I like all the detail!" and I'm like "uh... it's black " bah humbug D<

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dibbuns In reply to Onionpie [2008-10-27 20:28:17 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha, that sucks indeed! I did a really dark moody animation for my final BA piece and it looked awesome on my monitor... then I got it into uni for my assesment (after lightening it considerably just in case!) and you could still barely make out any details '^_^

You'd think they'd have just set a standard for the monitors etc, a standard setting for printers to go with them, and then eeeverything would work together. But noooo! Companies have to make everything so damned customisable! I love that with most things, but with a monitor and printer set up? You just want it to look the same everywhere really. There's no point in having differences! Sorry, went into a little bit of a rant there hahaha!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Onionpie In reply to dibbuns [2008-10-27 22:17:26 +0000 UTC]

eep that sucks! When it's something important, it's a real inconvenience. I do digital paintings for my friends, and I have to hop from one computer (with a good screen) to the other (the only one with photoshop D< ) until I'm satisfied with how it looks. in fact, that's what I had to do for this one -- and when I finally liked it enough to print it out, there were yet MORE problems I couldn't see on the stupid dark monitor

And no problem! I go on awful long rants, myself, as you can see And for srsly, right. "Hey, let's make all our monitors have DIFFERENT FUCKING BRIGHTNESS SETTINGS". Jeez. In fact, k listen to this. I have two PCs at home -- the one with PSCS2 and a rubbish, dark monitor. Another with a seemingly-alright monitor. The second one died, we gave its monitor to the one with PSCS2. Turns out it's way too bright! It looks way washed out (and not just in comparison to the mega-dark one. My lappy has a great screen, and it's more contrasty/darker than the dead-computer's monitor). Just like yours. THIS IS FRICKING RIDICULOUS D<

Gawd sometimes I hate computers >[

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dibbuns In reply to Onionpie [2008-10-27 22:27:00 +0000 UTC]

It is! It's the most brainless stupid thing in the world. And they don't have the excuse that they've made the monitors to work specifically with a certain printer, which might make a teeny bit of sense, they've just all been made to seemingly random specifications! I hates it I do. If they weren't do gosh darn addictive I'd boycott computers completely! But alas, the internets and shiny happy photoshopness keeps me hooked XD

You ever tried manually setting the gamma/ colour balance/ brightness n' contrast settings for your monitor through your computer? You can never get two monitors to look the same however much you tweak them. It can help though (took me hours to get my laptop set up, thankfully this computer only took about half an hour). Ah, it's nice to know my hatred is not alone in the world of computing!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Onionpie In reply to dibbuns [2008-10-27 23:06:06 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha, exactly! I'd boycott it too, but I also love internets and photoshop :B I guess we'll just have to put up with the utter stupidity of computer companies D:

Yeah, I've tried manually fiddling with it, on both monitors. And NOTHING works D: I got the reds to be a little less saturated on the dark one (oh, I forgot to mention that -- it was dark AND PINK D< ), and although it's still a little pink (couldn't desaturate the red anymore without it looking weird :c ) it's better. BUT STILL DARK. And the bright one is at its LOWEST brightness and it's that freaking washed-out. It's crazy stuff, fo' sho'

Jesus, haha - I saw the thumbnail and came here ready to discuss photography in zoos and how awkward it is, and it isn't a bleedin' photo at all, you beast! It's fantastic! Especially the facial features.

Did you know that Rhesus monkeys have been frequently tested on in Psychology experiments?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Onionpie In reply to ToySkunk [2007-06-13 19:21:16 +0000 UTC]

hehe thank you but yes, taking photographs of animals in zoos is indeed awkward, and bloody annoying D<

That's pretty cool, what kind of psychology experiments? 8D

ToySkunk In reply to Onionpie [2007-06-13 19:51:29 +0000 UTC]

I already said Psychology in my first post, didn't I? Oops.
Because this comment is otherwise useless - another experiment they did involved maternal separation and attachment. Basically they reared these baby Rhesus monkeys isolated from all other monkeys - they were given a cloth dummy and a wire dummy. The monkeys would go to the cloth one for comfort even if it the wire one was providing food, showing that comfort can be more important than basic needs such as feeding. The experiment unintentionally also proved that maternal separation leads to problems with communication and especially mating later.

D: oh dear. But that is pretty cool I remember watching some documentary or other where they did something like that with lions. They had a model of a lion with a dark mane, and a model of a lion with a pale mane, and the other lions hung around the light mane, so they caem to the conclusion that dark-maned lions are less friendly or whatnot.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ToySkunk In reply to Onionpie [2007-06-14 07:18:12 +0000 UTC]

They could have come to any conclusion from that though!

Onionpie In reply to ToySkunk [2007-06-14 19:59:40 +0000 UTC]

I know, I thought the same thing I mean, dark-maned lions could just generally be very smelly compared to lions wth pale manes, for all they know. Heh heh, yeah that might be part of the thing I saw, 'cause they mentioned it having to do with them having more testosterone, wihch is why all the other lions didn't hang out with it so much. All 'cept the ladies, I guess

ToySkunk In reply to Onionpie [2007-06-13 19:47:34 +0000 UTC]

Nasty, Psychology ones unfortunately.
There was one experiment that tested stress and the circumstances of responsibility. The monkeys were split into two groups. Both groups were given electric shocks every 30 seconds, but one of the groups could try and press a lever to stop each electric shock before it happened. That group started to die of stress-related illnesses, which they put down to having too much responsibility over the situation. Fun, huh?
