He looks so awesome in any expression (well except the two where he looks like he's going to kill you, then he just looks scary)! When I saw he was talking in french, I was like "oh cool, I wonder what he's saying?", one trip to google translate later, "oh, oh wow he's mad".

Mathis is more or less what you'd call a Stepford Smiler; That smiling, nice guy persona is a mask he wears to deal with shit in his life and to try and get more friends, because god knows this guy, being clearly Sinnohean (enemy country ahoy), incapable of hiding his giveaway accent and a recent immigrant doesn't have a lot of people he can associate with in Johto.
He actually has a bit of a temper and can get serious about things---he just chooses not to for most part.
Most part.
Until the war reaches a breaking point for him.

Mathis does have his flashing moments of flaring temper--he just keeps it really well hidden under his Stepford Smiler Nice Guy facade. After all, he wants friends and he believes a smile gets them better than that does
He learns to break out of it and be more honest with himself as the war goes on though.
