Out of all the ridicolus looking swords in the Final Fantasy series, the Ultima Weapon is the only one that i kinda liked

Try again with a smaller palette. Don't work so large if you can't shade in any way other than a gradient.

For one, this should help with your colors.
In photoshop I would use a hard round brush. Here I just recommend not dithering and only using 2-3 colors until it stops being a gradient.

Yeah, the Ultimate Weapon can be a bitch to beat, but I pulled it off AND learned Shadow Flare.
