I was organizing my doll pictures last night and I really couldn't get over how much I've improved over the years. I'm far from perfect now but I've improved a lot. So I thought I'd post this.
I also decided to put this together to show that even if you think your photos suck, with practice you can definitely improve. I mean come on, look at that first photo. Yeah it was the day Key arrived and my first time photographing a BJD but that's crap. The next one isn't much better! So no whining about how your pictures suck and you can't get any better! You can! You just need to practice!
And if for some reason anyone was curious, the first four photos are all Key v1 who had a default faceup, and the last is Key v2 who has a faceup by *raila . I couldn't post a picture of him from earlier in the year since that was one of the first pictures I took after he got back from getting his faceup.
This will most definitely be scrapped soon.
Key is a CP El from Luts.

Yup. They were my favorite doll glasses but they broke. ;_; I still have them, and can still use them but they're more difficult since... well, they're broken.

It was more that I was giggling my butt off at how bad my pictures were originally.
I should do stuff like this for other dolls. I have some truly awful group shots, which are still the bane of my photography existance. Those and full body shots.

well, i'm guessing the trend of auto-everything isnt really helping. it's getting a bit ridiculous for me – i mean, there are cameras with a 'smile shutter', meaning the camera automatically takes a the photo when the subject smiles. and like, face detection and all.
why would you even need a photographer with all that? /: sorry, ranting a little. i just think photog should be much simpler.

Oh I agree. It drove me insane when my mom got a shiny new DSLR (the same kind I have, she bought her's before mine) with all kinds of accessories and whatnot and she was using it like a regular point and shoot. Full auto everything. WHY get a DSLR if you're just going to use it like a point and shoot? That's such a waste of damn money!
I keep my camera in manual pretty much all the time. I don't even use auto focus unless I'm using it one handed or I'm taking pictures of animals.

cant agree more; i consider it practically abuse to shoot with full auto on a DSLR. it's pointless – cameras like DSLRs werent built to be used like a P&S's. i figure if you're gonna spend a whole lot of money on a camera, you should actually USE it.

I like it a whole lot better. Raila was always Key's biggest "fan", enough to the point that when I decided to sell him she was the first person I contacted, asking if she wanted to buy him. (I sold him to her cheaper than I would have to anyone else since I really liked the idea of her getting him.) So I knew she'd be the perfect person to do his faceup when I decided I needed him back.

I didn't get to see very much of Key v.1, and what I did see of him was later Key v.1 so the early shots of him make me giggle (bunny ears, go!)
Seeing a series like this is really inspirational, makes me want to go out and practice lots and lots

I really didn't post a huge amount of him on here until around '07 (which is why I always say my pageview count isn't nearly as impressive when you consider how long I've been on dA) but I used to post tons of pictures in my old doll journal. I was so proud of those too... which is so sad now.

That first wig makes me laugh. I love him so much better now.

That first wig was so awful. It was one of two I owned for him (the other one was black... or dark brown I guess) and it had no elastic! I've never had a fiber wig not have an elastic cap. Later on I started using it only when he wore a hat.

First thing I noticed was OMG KEY HAS A HUGE FOREHEAD!!!! 
His face looks so much softer with this face-up. I never noticed that before his eyebrows were so... snarky?

Key has a huge head! El has such a big head, which was my biggest problem with him and Donovan v1. His head is bigger than Donovan v2's but it's not as noticeable thankfully.
I still think Mir may have a bigger head though... and Kitten definitely does.

I think I noticed Kitten's huge head when he was next to Kishi.
I've never really noticed Key's though, mostly because I just get glued to his face the way you take pictures... nowadays. That old pic really shows that head.

LOL i love looking back at old photos and seeing the progression. it's usually such a large affair. xD The transformation of key. That first picture cracks me up. I have a few like that.

I have so many purely awful pictures from when he first arrived. I think I did get marginally better somewhat quickly, at least to the point where I wasn't taking up nose shots and he wasn't really awkwardly posed, but the quality of the pictures themselves had a lot to be desired.

I'd say I don't believe it but oh I don't know... I guess I might. Every now and then I'll be going through photo request threads on DOA or something and find old pictures by photographers I love and just sit there amazed at how much they've progressed.
