Description Full name: Big Hugs for You my Friend

I did my best. Desperately needs to be critiqued my an emoticonist who knows what they're talking about. So for once, I have opened my Request Critique box.

I know it doesn't flow well in the transitions and the faces change too dramatically for their own well-being.
But I learned a trick to pixel bigger emotes so they look like they were meticulously hand pixled. I might share that tip later. The technique I used still needs a little bit of refinement before I decide whether or not it's worthy to continue using and to share.

So, I made this because I've really been wanting to have a big version of the emote, to turn into a double plz account. But I have way to many frames for that, so it is necessary to shorten it.

PLZs!:

Anyway, I hope you like it.
Do not use on other sites or edit it it in any way.

If you're an emoticonist, I'd like to see any versions you could make of a big pixled hug too. Usable as a two part plz account of course. I'd love to see 'em.

Edit: Smoothed out some eye movements. And changed the purple emote's grin to make it bigger.

Edit: I made a emote base pack that has these colors in it [link] , although it's pixeled differently. It corresponds to the colors N and M in the pack.

You made this!? I've been using this emote a lot! It's so cheerful and lighthearted, and it's great to find the artist who made it! BTW, how many frames can you get in an icon? And where can I download what I need to make an animated gif?

At first i want to say that it's an really adorable Emote and i adore that you used bigger sized Emotes instead of the normal emotes This way it is easier to see their emotions

I am sure that you could improve a few things:
Personally i am not a big fan of gradient colouring especially on bigger emotes, since it looks quite odd in my opinion :\ but that's your decision of course but maybe trying something new could be fun as well ;D
here is how i would have done the base: [link] (zoomed in) [link] (normal zoom) and the example which hue i have used [link]
I noticed that you used the the same hue for the whole Emote maybe you could use a different hue but i was happily surprised that you a used slightly different hue for the green emote

The animation itself is very smooth, but i just noticed that the hand "jumps" a bit a the end, moving the hands in the last 3 frames will probably fix it: like [link] (on the bottom is my version) [link]

maybe you could also squish the hands when the hands are touching the green emote so it look more like that she is really touching him like [link] (my version is on top)

also the face looks like if it isn't attached to the face it looks like it is floating around adding slightly brighter/darker colours around the eyes and the mouth would make it look like that it is a part of it! like: [link] ( I also added a darker colour to the eyes)

and the transition between the faces bothers me a bit Why don't add a "new" face instead of fading the other one? Since real face don't fade like that ;D but I noticed that didn't used this transition when the purple emote opens her mouth when she glomps him! This looks good!

here is an example without fading: [link]

some neat tutorials: [link] [link]
I hope this helps you

(Sorry for not replying sooner. 4th of July was this week.)
"At first i want to say that it's an really adorable Emote and i adore that you used bigger sized Emotes instead of the normal emotes This way it is easier to see their emotions "
Thanks! (I originally had the idea of making it in vector with the pen tool. But I didn't have the patience for it. But it worked out for the best, pixels are much better.)
I wanted to make a big emote like that filled up most of the icon, plus space to jump around in. Plus, I kinda wanted to make a revamp/mix of and . And I love big emotes myself.

"I am sure that you could improve a few things:"
Yeah.

"Personally i am not a big fan of gradient colouring especially on bigger emotes, since it looks quite odd in my opinion :\ but that's your decision of course but maybe trying something new could be fun as well ;D"
Yes, I see your point. But I want to become more confident in my pixleing skills before I try pixleing everything by hand. I’m still learning the ropes. (Very slowly and in my spare time.)

β€œhere is how i would have done the base: (zoomed in)”
Wow, that’s big. (I have never figured out how to stretch out pixels in Photoshop without making the pixels fuzzy.)

β€œ(normal zoom)”
I like it. But I would try to use more colors and dithering, so it would look smoother.

β€œand the example which hue i have used”
Ah, and your hue version is on the left? Ok. I can see the difference, it would make it better if it was in a different hue. (One day, when I have time, and I remember it, I will have to go back and change it. )

β€œI noticed that you used the the same hue for the whole Emote maybe you could use a different hue”
Thanks for the tip.

β€œbut i was happily surprised that you a used slightly different hue for the green emote ”
Yay! Thanks.

β€œThe animation itself is very smooth, but i just noticed that the hand "jumps" a bit a the end, moving the hands in the last 3 frames will probably fix it: like [link] (on the bottom is my version) [link] ”
Ooh.. Yeah, I see it now, you’re right. That looks choppy. I’ll have to fix that too.

β€œmaybe you could also squish the hands when the hands are touching the green emote so it look more like that she is really touching him like [link] (my version is on top)”
Ooh, I baraly saw that at first. I agree it’s too 2D, and needs a squish. But the reason I haven’t done squash and stretch yet (like in my walking [link] ) is because since I am not hand pixleing my emotes – and have been using gradients so far, I don’t know how to pixel a squish yet… As I’ve stated above I haven’t become β€œconfident in my pixleing skills” I would like to β€œbefore I try pixleing everything by hand.” I would like to learn more about it and practice it though.

β€œalso the face looks like if it isn't attached to the face it looks like it is floating around adding slightly brighter/darker colours around the eyes and the mouth would make it look like that it is a part of it! like: [link] ( I also added a darker colour to the eyes)”
I kinda liked it though… :/ Is that bad? I could try and experiment with shadows though and see what I like. I’ll keep it it mind.

β€œand the transition between the faces bothers me a bit Why don't add a "new" face instead of fading the other one?”
Aha, yeah, that should have been obvious to me. I think I was trying to cut down on work. But I guess there’s no shortcut to success, huh?

"Since real face don't fade like that ;D"
Too true, too true.

"but I noticed that didn't used this transition when the purple emote opens her mouth when she glomps him! This looks good! "
Thanks. Yeah, I tried real hard to make that part look right. It was my first wack at making a better emote with more than transitions frames (which is what I've gotten used to from making stamps) and I wanted to make it more professional looking. (By the way, may I steal those frames you made? They are really nice.)

β€œsome neat tutorials:”
Thanks for the links to the neat tutorials.
And I appreciate all the time you took to make all those comparison pictures. It helps to see what you’re talking about.
Thank you for that wonderful critique, it was very helpful.
" "
Oh don't be shy or sorry about the comment, it was helpful and I needed to hear it. It wasn’t harsh or anything, just truthful. Hopefully I will be able to practice and apply it to future emotes. I mean, this is what this site is all about right?
Thank you for your honest opinion.

now i have to be sorry for replying so late

I just zoomed in, in photshop took a screen shot of it and removed the unimportant things

well pixel art is mostly about not using too many colours, and i have already used too many colours, but i agree that the dithering could have been better

I think it looks very cute I especially like that you made them bigger than regular emotes so that it's easier to see their cheerful expressions. The shading also looks very nice. There's just a tiny bit of choppiness in the animation for which I think some additional frames would help. Also the mouths keep warping open and close instead of actually opening and closing. I'm not sure if that was intentional but it looked a little bit odd xD

Other than that great job

Yeah, I see what you're saying. I'm still pretty new an pixleing anything, so I just used two detailed pixeled frames and made a frame in the middle that was at 50% opacity. I should go try and fix that someday.
"Other than that great job "
Thanks! I'm so happy you like it.
