Three months continued with little action. Jack Spicer’s company continued to thrive off the stupidity of others. Chase Young conceived many plans which he eventually threw away and left, as always. The Xiaolin appeared, as always, to flourish, but in truth they fought- as always- a losing battle. The Heylin was strong and the Xiaolin had not come to its own strength.

Hannibal watched, and waited.

Jack found a girlfriend. Chase knew and dismissed it from his thoughts. Perhaps it bothered him when Jack started looking at diamonds and rings- who could tell? Perhaps it was in his thoughts; perhaps, as with everything else, he let it go like the wind, washed it away with the waves, burnt it to the ground, buried it deep in his mind.

Hannibal watched, and slowly came to his conclusion.

“Hello? Yes, I know about that! Will you just- oh, no, excuse me- hello? Yes, I’m perfectly aware of that! Tell the others to stop ringing me!”
Jack slammed down both of the telephones, gritting his teeth before letting out a sigh.
The police are on to me. At last. It took them a while.
The left phone rang again.
“Hello? Oh, good. You rang at last. What took you?- no, I don’t want to hear excuses! Shut down all the labs. Put all the company data onto the backups systems and encrypt the lot of it, and you’d better make it good!” There was a slight pause. “Yes, I am sane, thank you! Do it now, and quickly! There are more things a man can lose than his job!” With that he dropped the receiver back into its place and sat down slowly. He had never been this tired- working through nights and days, all because of some warning… and now the police… his recent visit to Chase felt like a dream. Perhaps it was a dream. I was imagining it. Too much stress… I need a break… Jack groaned and stretched out, before wrinkling his nose.
And a shower.

The young man stretched out under the hot water, rubbing his temples. This was just too much. It was all catching up on him at once- four years of getting away with it, and now everything was happening at once…
But it’s my mess. My fault. I’ll sort it out somehow. The police won’t… can’t… find anything suspicious. I made the system myself. Only I know how to work it. Everyone else that knows is dead… there’s no-one to tell…
He slumped down to the tiles and sat with his hands over his head, letting the water beat down on his back.
Everything’s been jeopardised by this. Someone must have told…
He clenched his fists, hissing between his teeth.
“Damnit!”

He had gone over that point a thousand times and a thousand again, but surely there wasn’t anyone who knew anywhere near enough to convict him? The underworld knew he was a criminal, while the rest of the world had only rumours. Embezzlement, fraud, robbery… Jack had every time skilfully passed the blame to someone else, never looking too innocent to be true, but hardly illegal.

“Mister Spicer, sir?”
Jack blinked at the voice, shaking himself back to the world.
“Mister Spicer?” Jack sighed as his secretary called through the door again.
“What is it?” he asked irritably, shaking water from his hair.
“Sir,” she said timidly, “there’s someone asking after you.”
“What? The police?”
“No, sir, a Mister Young. We tried to get him to go, but he refused to. He said he wanted to see you.”
Chase? That…!
“Tell him to wait,” Jack said back flatly. Then, as an afterthought he added, a dark smile on his face, “I might be a while.”
