This is for Tinytoadstools contest! The theme for the contest was The Last Days Of Summer, and I felt like Love, Romance, and the blatantly obvious continuing of growing older really captured that. I wrote a little story to go with it, ITS UNFINISHED! But I will post the rest of it in a piece of literature later on. I hope you all enjoy <3

There is nothing that says “The Last Days Of Summer” more than a gently fading romance drifting out with the oceans tide. Ah, it’s such a beautifully poetic thing, yet it’s a difficult and heartbreaking time for two who have fallen for one another. The fateful yet common choice of “Me or your duties” is present between two, making one or the other decide. It can end in fruitful love, or In a hopeless tragedy.

Euphydryas slowly glided down to the slowly chilling sand with the grace as that of a butterfly. Her claws dug into the sand, pleasure spreading across her face at the sensation. “Today was amazing!” she said to herself as she plopped onto the sand with a deep and worn sigh.
She watched as the ocean slowly lapped the shores, grasping shells and rocks just to drag them into its depths. Euphydryas. Couldn’t help but contemplate how the shells become chipped and shattered whilst the stones get gently tumbled into objects smooth to the touch. Ah, the wonders of having time alone to think. You can get dragged into the deepest parts of yourself, and manage to fall into a depressive spiral if you go too far. That’s where Euphydryas went.
I’m going to have to cross the sea soon, she thought to herself remorsefully. I don’t wish to leave everyone. I don’t wish to ascend the throne. Chances are, I’ll never see Vega, or Cordelia, or Cassiopeia ever again. I’ll be yet another slave to the SilkWings. Euphydryas held out her ivory talons with a deep and depressed sigh, looking at them with unwanted thoughts flashing through her head. How easy it would be to just put them to her neck. Everything would stay the same. With a violent shake of her head, the thought partially floated away.
“Euphydryas!” Came a voice and the sound of gentle wingbeats from behind. The hybrid whipped her head around to see Vega slowly descending from the sky, the stars from the membrane of their wings blending right in with the others.
“Oh, hey Vega,” Euphydryas said, turning around and repositioning herself to face Vega.
Vega landed silently and folded their shimmering green wings. “You left the party early, why so? Your missing the dumb competition between Dreamkeeper and Cass!” They said with a laugh.
Euphydryas scratched the back of her neck gingerly. “Oh, I just got a bit overwhelmed. That’s all,” she replied with an awkward smile as she met Vega’s eyes.
“I see,” Vega murmured as they assumed a comfortable sitting position with a sigh. “Your lying Euph, don’t think I can’t tell,” they said bluntly as they tapped Euphydryas’s snout with a claw.
“I’m not-“ she began before getting abruptly cut off.
“Hush, it’s no use now. You never get overwhelmed in situations like that. What’s the real problem?” Vega questioned, unintentionally sounding harsh when doing so.
Euphydryas’s amber eyes seemed to glisten with tears in the dying light. “Your right,” she confessed. “The true problem is…” She seemed to choke on her words, unable to get them out because of the lump in her throat. Taking a deep breath in, she continued as best she could. “The problem is that I’m not ready. Not ready to leave Pyrrhia. All our times at Jade mountain are up, and we’re all going to have responsibilities now,” she said as she began to cry, the tears rolling down her scaly cheeks looking like shooting stars as they fell.
Vega jutted out their lip in an attempt to make a sympathetic face. “Aww, it’s alright Euph,” they said as they slid closer and Embraced Euphydryas tightly.
That’s when the waterworks really began to flow. “I don’t want to be queen,” she sobbed quietly. “I want to stay here with everyone else.”
Vega began to caress her back gingerly. “You don’t have to go back ever, you know. You can just disobey orders and come stay with me in the NightWing kingdom or something.”
Euphydryas began to sob even harder, making Vega’s dark scales slick with her tears. “You don’t understand!” She wailed, her distraught voice making Vega wince. “The Queen said she would kill you and everyone else if I didn’t return home.”
The NightWing pushed away from her friend, shock dancing in her emerald eyes. “No, that’s not true… is it?”
Euphydryas met their eyes and nodded. “A few lives don’t matter to her. In the Queens eyes, you’re all just bugs she can squash.”
Vega let out a profuse sigh and rubbed their temples. “You know what? I don’t care, you don’t care. Nobody cares. None of this is relevant.” They stood up and trotted over to wade in the frigid ocean water. Looking back at Euphydryas, they said, “c’mon! Lets enjoy our time together, however long it may be.”
With a sniffle and wipe of her eyes, Euphydryas joined Vega in the water, cringing at how cold it was. As the water lapped at their ankles, the two awkwardly stared in one another’s eyes. The hybrid opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.
With a nervous shuffle of their wings, Vega attempted to break the silence. “Shall we take a stroll?” They asked, indicating with their tail that they walk along the beach.
