Now this is a detailed photo of a DR1.
The blue sky makes a perfect background for this historic plane.
Painted in the colors of "La petit rouge" it is nicely honoring the ace of aces Manfred von Richthofen.
The diagonal composition both helps you capture the entire aircraft well. Movement on the propeller is a very nice detail and creates a bit of "life" in this image.
The idea to paint a plane red came to the pilot long before he flew the DR1 yet he is most famed for the red DR1 and our first thought when we see one is aptly "The Red Baron"
This photo made me grin a bit cause I had just put down the red barons auto biography after having finished it when I noticed this photo. Talk about coincidence.

Thanks very much for the critique. I appreciate the interest in this image. You know of course that the Baron's Flying Circus where made up of planes in very flamboyant colors hence the name "Flying Circus".

Indeed, He broke military regulations when he painted his plain red and as the his men followed him in his example the name came on. However their movability was another reason for their nickname. They would move up and down the western front being in one town one week and at times even being in a different country the next. Another reason for their nickname, well the addendum to it anyway

Thanks for the additional history on the flying circus. I have to admit my knowledge on that part of combat aviation is somewhat sketchy... and Thanks again for the critique on the DR1 replica image.

Any time
Thank you for sharing that photo with us.
If you are interested in that part of aviation history I could recommend both Manfred von Richthofens autobiography as well as James Norman Halls memoirs from world war 1. At the moment I am reading Kitchener's Mob a memoir from the trenches, after that I'll read High Adventures. Both are memoirs by James Norman Hall from his time in service.
He is a historical oddity a man who fought in one war for three different countries, all on the same side.

Thanks that would be great. Right now I'm reading "Fighter Pilot The memoirs of Legendary Ace Robin Olds".

Well, when there are fond memories he shared it would make the story important to you more so then it would to very many others.

I broke the cardinal rule for shooting prop aircraft and that is a shutter speed no faster than 1/250 sec, or else it gives the impression of hanging a model airplane on fishing line and taking a picture of it..............not too professional!

It took me a little while to work out how to avoid that. In fact I think someone told me what to do in the end.

It's not completely stopped, there is still a little bit of blur on the top end of the blade. Anyway, it's kind of cool because it shows that split second prop stop needed for the MG to fire without blowing the prop off the aircraft.
