Eeesh.... You know, one bad habit that always stands out to me among amateur fan comics is crude speech bubbles. You don't need to mold the outline of the bubbles that close to the text as if it's shrink-wrapped. A simple oval would suffice. You also need a better comic font. Using Arial or Comic Sans makes for mediocre page design. There are plenty of appropriate comic fonts at Blambot.com .

I actually like comic sans font for comics.

I really don't care to look professional. My comics are for fun.
Go criticize someone who actually asks for it and is looking to be a pro.
This is just a hobby for me, I'm not going to take it seriously like you might.

That's a real nice attitude you have. You dismiss criticism because you don't care about improving your artwork.

Ora-Ivory In reply to glitcher [2019-03-10 19:28:11 +0000 UTC]

It's not that.
It's that I don't care to become a 'professional', as I want to keep art as a hobby and something I can enjoy.
I learn plenty by myself. I learned to draw by myself without anyone forcing their ideas about art on me for 5 years.

I never asked for your criticism, so you shouldn't bother pushing it on me. I don't see it as a very welcoming thing, so of course I would be semi-unwelcoming towards you. It wasn't asked for.

What. The. Hell.

If you think that improving the font and speech bubbles in your comic is the road to becoming 'professional', you have a very distorted idea of the craft indeed. This strikes me less like an attempt to avoid professionalism and more like a "La la la! I'm not listening!" resistance to constructive criticism that can improve your artwork because you just don't give a shit. Get a clue, man.

And second, you DID ask for my criticism when you opened your submission to comments. That's what it's there for. If you think that feedback should only be positive unless the artist requests criticism, you are seriously deluded. I specifically warned against this misconception in step 4 of my guide to criticism here . If you don't want criticism, just disable comments on all your submissions from now on and live in your own little bubble where you won't listen to any artistic advice. Otherwise, stop being a brat and make a small change to your speech bubbles. It won't make you 'professional', but it will improve the presentation of your comic.

Please excuse my irrational behavior from before. I apologize for the outburst.

I really do care about improving my artwork, otherwise these last two years of study have been wasted. I suppose I'm confused by how sudden it was for you to come at me.... I should probably listen to you, but it does have a few conplications:
For 1, I use SAI, which doesn't use text bubbles and text. I don't know of any other real programs I could easily get to with those options.
2nd, changing from SAI to another program just for the speech bubbles makes me feel a little weird (I dunno what it is, perhaps that I feel it's useless?)

But if text bubbles are really as important as you say, I will try and make improvements. Sometimes it's hard to adjust to change.

Once again, please forgive me. I clearly wasn't thinking and being a bit venty towards you.

No harm, no foul. Sorry if I came off as too abrasive in my last reply, sometimes resistance just gets under my skin. I know that can't insert text in SAI, but you have to have added it in some other program if it's there on the page. Besides, you don't need anything fancy to change the font. Just download a decent comic font and add it to C:/Windows/Fonts to use it. (That's how it works in Windows 7, I don't know about other systems.) It looks like you draw the speech bubbles freehand. That's okay too, all I'm saying is that you shouldn't shrink-wrap your text like that. Just any ovoid shape for a bubble will suffice. Oh, and be careful about typing your text at a consistent, legible size. I wrote in my tutorial here that the two biggest mistakes in fan comic dialogue are:

1) Typing too small
2) Changing font size every other panel

Don't fall into those traps. Make sure your page is legible at medium resolution, not hi resolution.
