Description "It was a town of red brick, or of brick that would have been red if the smoke and ashes had allowed it; but as matters stood, it was a town of unnatural red and black like the painted face of a savage."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Herein lay the spring of the mechanical art and mystery of educating the reason without stooping to the cultivation of the sentiments and affections. Never wonder. By means of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, settle everything somehow, and never wonder."
--Hard Times, by Charles Dickens
Brilliant book, and this photo made me think of it.
I know! That's what they made me think of when I saw them.
Aww. That's sad. The sky isn't even blue.
I know. It's great though, for the theme.
For the theme, yes. But it's still sad.
Those last few pictures you've taken have been awesome. They're on another level, all of them. I dunno why, but they're all sort of... dreamy, maybe? There's something similar about them. Maybe because they're all in Wilmington? Or the buildings? Something. Well, and the one of you, too. It seems sort of dreamy like the other ones. But that doesn't seem like a good enough word to describe it.
It is.
Thank you. I'll chock that up to a perfect balance of setting, lighting, and editing. And of course, me just being awesome. Maybe I've been in a dreamy mood? The pictures of the buildings are actually from a while ago. I simply neglected to put them up.
You are awesome, but those other factors probably had something to do with it. Either way, they all seem to have some common factor, and they are all really cool. Perhaps it is the haziness. It just seems strange that you recently put up a mix of new and old stuff, and a lot of it seems similar.
oracle-of-nonsense In reply to whitefox00 [2009-08-25 02:15:13 +0000 UTC]
Probably. It could be perhaps the over-all mood I was in whilst taking/editing them. That tends to have some effect. Similar as in repetitious, or otherwise?
whitefox00 In reply to oracle-of-nonsense [2009-08-25 03:04:43 +0000 UTC]
Uhh, yeah, I'd say the mood was about the same. Reminds me of the first line of "The Raven", actually: "Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary..."
The "dreary" and "weary", especially. The buildings themselves seemed sort of resigned, especially the one by itself. All of the pics seemed sort of thoughtful. So yeah. W00t for literary reference. And w00t for my spell-checker telling me that 'w00t' is a word....
oracle-of-nonsense In reply to whitefox00 [2009-08-25 20:07:23 +0000 UTC]
Really? That's interesting, as I picture the Raven being much less industrially "dreary" and "weary".
Partially because they're old, and partially because of the way I edited them. I had old London in mind, I believe. It said that's a word???
Oh. I always thought of it as being really slow and almost monotonous. At least around the beginning.
Hrm... cool. Yeah, apparent1y any w0rd w1th l3tt3rz 1n 1t c0untz a5 a w0rd. But "spellchecker" isn't one...
Really? Can't say I ever felt that way. But I'm an old Poe fan, so...
Wow. Isn't that just a lovely bit of ironic phailness?
A lot of his work seems to have sort of a heavy mood hanging over it, pushing it down. I've not read a lot, but The Tell-Tale Heart and The Fall of the House of Usher both gave me that impression. That all seems strange now, since I'd never thought about Poe and industrialism, but they seem sort of fitting.
Tis a bit odd for sure. And yes, phailcake.
Yuuuup. He was basically your first goth. I can totally see him (if he were a teen today) in Tripp pants, with black makeup and dyed-black hair, listening to metal and writing his stuff.
whitefox00 In reply to oracle-of-nonsense [2009-09-10 02:58:20 +0000 UTC]
But his hair was black to start with. And I think he'd be into something more subdued. Yeah, he was pretty dark, but not in the glamorous, metal sort of way. I'll bet he would have like the Velvet Underground, though.
It was totally dark brown. How is metal glamorous? I was going to say emo, but that's not giving him enough credit. I can definitely see TVU though.
No, it was black. Or dark enough brown to the point where it doesn't make enough of a difference to me. It depends on the type of metal. Naturally anything popular, but you know how many sucky metal bands there are - they all have really cliched solos and stuff.
Oh, and maybe Nirvana. But definitely the "Sister Ray" part of the Velvet Underground.
You only think that because they didn't have colored photography back then. I was thinking of symphonic metal, I should've specified. And no, I don't really know, because I don't really enjoy most metal sub-genres.
Eh, maybe. Mayyyyybe. But yes, definitely that.
whitefox00 In reply to oracle-of-nonsense [2009-09-11 01:26:38 +0000 UTC]
Well yeah, that could be part of it. But he'd look better with black hair, and it looks black in pictures, so why not pretend it's black anyway? >.>
Symphonic? I think metal has had the most babies out of any genre. You've never heard a bad metal song before? Or say, seen a snippet of a news article about Metallica? Or looked at a Rolling Stone?
Oh come on! Kurt created plenty of weird lines. And the foetuses were pretty strange, too.
Because. I like brown bettah.
Yeah, it's the only kind I find even mildly bearable. And yes, it really does. Uhm. I dunno. I usually try to not listen when my brothers play their music. xP
Yeah, I was sort of thinking about that when I agreed. So, yes.
Oh. Well then. You should get them to try acoustic.
Okay.
White is much better as for hair. Or maybe silver rather than white. But black isn't as great.
No, really. Challenge them to sound good on an acoustic. It's really easy to think that you sound awesome with distortion, since it's fun, but it doesn't sound as good most of the time when the same thing is played on an acoustic. Boys love proving themselves with challenges, so yeah.
I'm really not that picky. I think silver is cooler than black, though.
Er. I meant...not the music they play, but the music they listen to. I don't mind what they play, since they haven't written anything of their own.
Maybe. I don't think I'm ever going to say that I'm completely happy, that I have everything I worked really hard for, because a lot of those things aren't possible. Do you see this from my point of view?
It's fucked up as hell, yes, but there isn't anything to do. I don't know what principle made it so that some people could grow up to be happy with what they have, but it skipped over me.
