Description I've decided
that if Jesus came to Earth now,
he'd probably smoke cigarettes
and always fall in love
with the wrong person.
If we wake up at night
and can't get back to sleep,
I could teach him
how to un-love his neighbor
and he could tell me
what the salty water feels like
under his feet.
He might wear his hair in a ponytail
and his eyes would crinkle when he smiles,
and I would smile too,
then pause
and in a small voice ask him what hell was like,
and is there any way to get someone back
if they've already gone too far?
He would take a drag on his cigarette,
nod kindly at the two boys holding hands,
and say that hell is more a state of being
than an afterlife, and no amount of love
can rescue someone from their own mind.
I thought so, I would say, not mentioning
the nights I've cried myself to sleep
trying anyway.

Funny, I think Jesus would smoke, too.

This is awesome.

I really love this. I read this over a few times. Very good job. Imagery is spot on. Narration is lovely. I'm feeling like you have some run- ons. I wasn't sure why you mentioned the gay couple. To give Jesus an accepting light or to play on the theme of love? Or both This is a very interesting poem. I like how you personified Jesus as a normal teenager and how he & the girl become friends. I also noted how she tries to teach him to not love certain people almost like guidance disguised as misguidance. Which goes hand in hand with Hell. Then she asks if you can get someone back after she tried to tell him not to love. It reminds me of concept Rousseau had, the nature concept that a man needs to learn a be nothing but a man. But society tells him different like to be a citizen and a man. It's ike what the girl is doing, two totally contradictory concepts. Yup. Thoroughly enjoyed this.

It was both, but more to show his acceptance of people. Her trying to teach him how not to love someone was sort of based on her own experience with falling in love with people who are not good for you, and trying to help him get over the girls he fell in love with. Not really not to love people, just not to love the ones who hurt you, to be able to let those people go. The hell concept was her being afraid the person she loved would go to hell, and that she couldn't get them back, which, yes, was contradictory to her telling him not to love people who are bad for you. Interesting concept by Rousseau, I'm intrigued by your interpretation of this poem Thank you for commenting.

Oh and not blasphemous, just your interpretation of Jesus. It seems like if the Bible was set in 2010 or the 90's this would be it. Rolling with the crowd but guided by his own moral compass.

I don't think it's blasphemous. It's honest. Things like this I think are exactly what God would do because it makes Him relateable. I don't know how to explain what I'm thinking and feeling about this without sounding like a moron or a hypocrite, but it's a lovely piece.

It is definitely honest. I suppose blasphemous would depend on who you are. Feel free to give it a try, there's not judgment from this quarter. I always like to know what people think. Thank you.

Why would someone consider something like this blasphemous? I don't get it. God is love. End story. Loving a homosexual is no different from loving a murderer. It's a sin yes, but it's no different from any other sin. God doesn't hate sinners, he just hates sin. -shakes head- I don't understand. This is a perfectly acceptable and beautiful rendition of who and what God is.

Some people might. To each their own, I suppose it is. I think they might mostly object to God being made out to seem like a normal person, more so than the homosexual aspect of it. But how would I know? There you go, and if anyone attempts to call you any silly names, I shall simply delete their comment. :] Thank you again for your willingness to comment.

shadow-hostage In reply to oracle-of-nonsense [2010-09-24 20:25:11 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. But why? He WAS a normal person. -laughs- It's just so silly. I don't think He minds. There's just something so sweet about this to me. Becoming human was, I believe, one of the most wonderful things He's ever done. He loved us enough to create us and BECAME one of us, then DIED for us. What's so wrong about continuing to show that aspect of Him in a different way? Sorry, I don't mean to sound like I'm angry at you, I'm not, it's just...people. -sigh-. I suppose it all just seems so silly to men. The piece is wonderful.

I don't think He does either. I tend to wonder a bit (quite humanly, I suppose) about who Jesus would have fallen in love with, or if he had any "crushes" when he was younger that aren't mentioned for obvious reasons. I think that a lot of "Christian" people wouldn't really approve of him if he decided to swing back by our little planet. It's perfectly fine, you don't sound angry with me, just with certain others who claim to belong to your religion, and who you disagree with. Am I right? What seems silly to men?

shadow-hostage In reply to oracle-of-nonsense [2010-09-27 12:21:31 +0000 UTC]

I think it's highly possible. We are told that he loved Lazarus and that he was one of his closest friends. It also says that when he was a child he reasoned as a child, so I think it's highly probable, but he also was unlike any other man, so who knows. Isn't that strange? -shakes head- It wouldn't make a difference to me. Oh good, I hate feeling like I'm coming across in an aggressive manner. Most of the time I don't mean it.

True...-squirms- Though I'm uncomfortable with the term religion because it's so much more than that. But you are indeed right. Ooops...typo...I meant me... XD

I guess we never will. Mystery is as fun as anything, I suppose, and is definitely more inspiring. It is indeed, quite strange. It's alright, I completely understood you, and your typed tone.

Ah, sorry. Spirituality? Relationship? Belief system? I sometimes forget the negative connotations "religion" seems to carry. Ah, I see.

It is. Well thank you. I'm afraid I have a tendency to come across in a way I don't mean too.

No, it's okay. It's really not a big deal it just...makes me cringe. Faith works, or relationship.

oracle-of-nonsense In reply to shadow-hostage [2010-10-07 14:18:00 +0000 UTC]

It's understandable; people are occasionally too eager to read more into a religious conversation than is actually there.

Faith then.

Funny, this reminds me of something the sunday-school teacher said recently. He was talking about talking to God, and I thought about that and found it a little ridiculous, because I find it hard to believe that if someone believes they are talking to God how they could not just skip the whole "you're so great" thing and get to important questions about life and quantum physics.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

oracle-of-nonsense In reply to BrotherBjork [2009-06-12 17:51:12 +0000 UTC]

-chuckles- Yeah, you would think that way. In my mind, he doesn't really answer in a way where you could pin down exactly what he said, so asking about quantum physics would be sort of pointless.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BrotherBjork In reply to oracle-of-nonsense [2009-06-12 18:18:50 +0000 UTC]

I know that you supposedly don't get a definite answer, but I've also heard that apparently God answers all questions in some form. So, if one were to sincerely ask God about quantum physics, then is it not conceivable that God would in some convoluted fashion tell you about it?
