Description I wrote up a tutorial of my first leatherworking project. It took a lot of time and research, but I know anyone who has time and patience can do it. I also really want to thank the Tandy man who talked to me for about an hour when I went to their store. He gave me so much advice. Thank you!

I also learned a lot about leatherworking from who has a great maskmaking tutorial on her livejournal. I mean, that's what armor is, right? A mask for your body. Yesssss. Thank you!

Sorry for any typos (so tired), and please ask any questions you may have.

That sounds almost identical to how I started. Not to mention I use that same lumiere paint. Aren't the colors the best.

And more specifically I am referring to your Steampunk Samurai. Very unique and creative. Love the overall design and tooling detail.

It's 40% complete. I have some great ideas for the rest. It's going to be very unique. I just picked up the rest of my supplies yesterday. I am hoping it will be done within the next month. I never know because I don't sketch or draw a blueprint guideline. I just stair at the leather until something comes to mind, then I just go.

Yes, I love their colors! Also, amazing gallery. Your tooling is really nice and your pieces have awesome looking texture.

Thank you. I find that with each each project, that my skill level improves greatly. I find different ways to grow better and better. Once a suit of armor is finished, I look back and see all of the things that I could have done differently to speed up the process and avoid certain steps or any backtracking. The traditional Samurai was my first project ever working with leather and the steampunk samurai is my latest.

Your skill progression is very amazing. I have just been doing small items like bracers, but perhaps if I get inspired I will work on another breastplate. Can't wait to see your finished armor!

Thank you very much. I guess the more you enjoy and love something, the faster the absorption of information. Passion fuels drive, drive fuels progression. It almost reminds me of back in school as a child. The subjects that I really didn't care for, I had a hard time paying attention to. In turn, I didn't learn so quickly resulting in poor grades. Lol. The subjects I loved, captivated my attention, so then my growth was rapid and my grades were fine. I guess the same goes with anything in life.

Faved...

Great of you...
to put this Tutorial up...
Inspirering...

I confess...! I faved because of your sentense:

"Armor is...a mask for your body"...

very original...!
Faved it not because of the fine colours or lines...
not for the beautiful pictures...
not the instructions...
the armor is helpless as armor...a sword will cath everywhere...!
but that is brilliant...?!
armor to catch...!

That sentense...!
I always thought Armor ment: " Amour "...!
Armored people looks like that:
Ahhh...!
I'm in love with my body...

Greetings Moose...Jakob.

Greetings Jakob.

Thanks for creating this great tutorial! I can't wait to try out your method as I have pirate armor I'm itching to attempt....! I do have a question regarding leather selections from Tandy, though.
I found that I'll have to purchase it online to get a decent length of leather (as there isn't a store near me that sells large leather hides). On their site I saw where they had leathers for armor and shields but I was wondering, can some of the other types of hides they sell be used that will get a similar result?

I think I've seen the one you are describing and I think that just refers to the fact it's really thick/heavy duty (like 14oz), which would be hard to work with. Something like Craftsman Oak Tooling Sides 8-9 oz is what I would use. Just make sure it's veg-tanned tooling leather and you'll be fine. Tooling leather varies in cost by thickness and it's quality (whether or not it has blemishes, if it's cracked or supple, etc). Let me know if you have more questions
