Description Drew a sketch of my old High School OC, Lan. It was nice touching my roots again and remembering why I loved drawing.

I did this last year too. Its funny seeing the sudden style change. Here's an old reference from 2008 if you wanted to see that too lol

what a cute little character... xD

If he was the main Character of a Manga I would totally buy it (and then forget to buy the other issues)

This may seem an odd question...you got any tips on how to make linework feel "intentional"?
I'm not sure if you ever experienced this,Β but when I paint the colors appear as if they aren't part of the linework (almost like they are trying to pop out of the lines) I'm not sure if I'm going too dark or making the lines too thick.
Any pointers?

hmmm thats a tricky one since merging lineart and painting is one of the most difficult things i struggle with. It really depends on the 'look' that you're going for.

Personally, I like to go with medium-thick colored lineart:Β fav.me/d6yyudd
It helps to limit your palette while shading to highlights/midtones/shadows, while throwing accented reflective lighting here and there. For example, Yoshi's green color is divided by yellow, green, and teal, with some orange in certain 'warm' areas.

You can also go for very thin, light colored lineart:Β fav.me/d4uv56k
Or have really thick, soft and colorful lineart:Β fav.me/d2az70f
Or you can paint over and under your lineart:Β fav.me/d5m3p3y

It all really depends on what you want. Keep an eye out for artwork that does what you want to do and study it. Observe how they use their lineart and how they paint with it. Hope this helps!

I do like the Bee knight one, and it points out something I have yet to do: vary the line color. I feel I need to stop using purely black outlines, at least until I understand how to better.
I need to give the linework more care than I have been giving it, then use it to accent the subject.

Also looking at your Yoshi picture (which is nice by the way) shows me something else I should brush up on my understanding of shadows and highlights. my shadows in my most recent submission look vastly to subdued to point out a light source and they are improperly placed, not feeling natural.

You've given me a lot to think about, nowΒ I've gotta study these works more carefully. Thanks a bunch, this kinda introspection and thinking got me motivated!
