The movies aren't bad (except for X-Men 3, ugh). Wolverine is definitely the most developed and enjoyable character out of them tho.

I always loved Emma Frost and Psylocke and Magik, myself. XD I think I'm one of the few people who doesn't like Shadowcat, (who can be an utter asshole sometimes) but thankfully Tokyo ESP basically has 'Shadowcat, but better!' with Rinka Urushiba, so I get my phasing fill.

Haven't read any recent coming at all. Shadowcat used to be my crush back when I was a kid and X-Men Evolution was airing on TV, haha.

She was a crush for a lot of people. But seriously, pick up Tokyo ESP. It's X-Men but manga and better XD.

But yeah a lot of people fell in love with her for being kinda the 'rookie rising the ranks' character back in the 80s and 90s. Other women have since taken her spot, but with the exception of X-23, not many have matched Shadowcat in terms of popularity. My big problem with her though is she tends to be very much an asshole to some characters, most notably Emma Frost. I get Emma just kinda...fell into heroism, but I'm a sucker for characters that try to redeem themselves, and Emma has had a great track record. But Kitty really never gives her a chance, nor really anyone who tries to redeem themselves, even though X-Men is one of the few comics where that tends to stick. Look at Gambit and Quicksilver and ESPECIALLY Scarlet Witch, who went from X-Men villain to one of the greatest Avengers ever.

Hopefully I can find and read it online. The thought of an X-Men "manga" is quite interesting!  

Dunno what the deal is but I feel like the writing in modern comics is kind of sloppy and not as dedicated as it used to be, sadly. 
There are many characters that fade into obscurity when they could've been so much more. Perhaps Kitty needs some more character development regarded that aspect of her. And as you said, there are lots of characters across many medium that started out as villains but over time became main characters of awesome heroes.
