Description
An illustration for ~kanelam 's wonderful fanfic 'Holding On to Let Go'.Quite possibly the darkest interpretation of Shepard and Liara's relationship, the story shows how Liara began her path towards her role in ME2, and how far Sheena Shepard is willing to go to put her past behind her.
That's something I really wanted to show with this pic - Shepard is facing towards the light - the future. She may not always be successful in her attempts, but she is at least trying to put her past behind her.
Liara on the other hand, has for the first time been exposed to the darker side of the world, and has taken her very first step towards becoming the Liara we see in ME2.
The smoking gun represents an event that forever binds the two together, and also sets them off on their very different paths.

Before I read your description, I thought that this was Liara and Shepard about to duel each other to the death. I'm glad that's not quite the case.

I love this interpretation...though to be honest I am really glad Liara didnt become evil like I thought she would after becoming the new broker.I think shepard played a very large role in that.Keeping her good.

I absolutely love the textures and color scheme you utilized for this piece, and I must say that I appreciate how the piece is focused so much on Shepard and Liara as people rather than just subjects. It gives one time to ponder the past and future incarnations of both characters while still being able to appreciate the piece itself.

This is beautiful. Definitely a lot of emotion. I particularly like the way the fire illuminates Liara, and the symbolism you put in regarding her facing the dark as Shepard faces the light. Really nice.

I like how it shows the darker quality of the game and the characters (I loved Mass Effect but it just didn't have the atmosphere for a supposed end of all things invasian) this sort of shows how the game Liara herself matured to cope with it

Yeah. For some reason I always liked Liara. Dated her in playthroughs as both female and male shepard.
Anyway. What I liked and didn't like:
The armor looks and feels very Mass Effect-like, as does the other one I've looked at
Love the hands - I can really 'feel' them gripping tightly
The fire is great, and so is its lighting
Their expressions feel real and set the tone - nice job!
The black and white shift on Liara's gun doesn't quite feel like it did in the game, but it's still a pretty damn good recreation of the gun.
I don't dig the smoke on the gun - feels detached from the gun itself, you know what I mean?

I love how you put so much thought into this with the symbolism. This is a gorgeous piece of work, really smooth and defining. I like it a lot!

You really captured something I don't often see in your work; atmospheric sybolism. The way you laid out the color tones to this piece sends a very strong message.
And plus, I just love the way you excecuted the lighting. Not flawless per se, but you balanced the color elements very well.
One thing that I would offer advice on is Shepard's upper arm. I think it would stand to have more definition, specifically to more emphasize its (generally) cylindrical shape, to keep it from looking flat.

Wow, you really did manage to design a pic with Liara and Fem Shep holding hands that might keep from being posted as porn. At least until someone photoshops on some nipples.

Oh yeah, and its awesome. I really love the facial expressions in particular. My only critique would be that I think the characters would stand out more if there was a bit more contrast between Liara and Shepard's Armor. You might consider adding the N7 stripe down Shepard's arm to provide a clear line which differentiates the two and made Liara's armor a tad darker so that it doesn't blend into Shepard's quite so much.

If I added the N7 stripe, the image would become completely inaccurate - remember the stipe goes down Shepard's right arm

This is awesome! I have read kanelam's story (one of my favorite Shepard/Liara ones) and I think you've captured the spirit of it with this piece. The detail is excellent, especially with Liara's face. I love the fire effect and how Liara's armor reflects it...nice touch, given the symbolism in the piece.
