I'm pretty sure it's just Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky that you can become him or have him as a partner. Not Super Mystery Dungeon.
However, if the Pokemon Professor offered me a Shinx as a starting pokemon, I would very happily accept it.
Here's a question, if you could have ANY basic pokemon as a starter, what would it be? Be mindful that you can't choose legendarys and if you choose Magmar, you have to go with Magby instead etc.
