Description #3 of 4 pumpkins im doing this year for a charity drive / fundraiser for my Extra-Life marathon this november! 

this weeks winner was Fidget, from Dust: An Elysian Tail. 

Easily the most fun i've had carving a pumpkin in a while! (since discord 2 weeks ago i guess

well, enjoy! 

Working time : 3.5 hours , lit with a few utility candles

but the quick answer is, i drew a rough sketch to use as a stencil, drew it on my pumpkin and filled in the rest of the lines (you can still see the marker on the eye areas). after i drew out fidget, i coloured her in a temperature scale to depict which depths i'd use to get the desired effects. 

once it was all in place and the pumpkin was cleaned out, i marked inside the lines with a scalpel, once the whole shape was cut, i crossed it up and down to form small squares in the pumpkin skin. once this was done, i used a clay sculpting tool that looks like a dentists' scraper to peel back the skin section by section. once the skins off, you can use the same tool (or similer ones) to get to desired depths!
