I know, right?! I SO can't get that picture out of my head: Metalcop/Chief Bolin fighting alongside Korra, & probably having Mako as his right-hand man (officially, as far as the police force is concerned, it's REALLY Korra & Mako still looks out for both of them as the opposite to the 'right-hand man' ideal)
& I seriously love your ideal of their children, too perfect! Especially if they end up naming their son after his uncle, that'd be just priceless. <3

My Next-Gen ideal actually has their grandson OR great-grandson as the next Avatar. Earth IS the next element in line, so it only makes sense, & I can't NOT picture Bolin still around. Mopey for a little while, likely, but not gone as well. So he'd easily train the next Avatar if that be the case, & then follow down the line. Maybe Mako even teaching the firebending, lol. XD
I actually have an AU of the trio meeting as children, where Korra's parents meet with the council or similar reasons, get mugged themselves, & Korra, draws the boys' attention because the trauma triggers her Avatar State (much like finding Gyatso caused Aang to do the same), both boys calm her down, Mako, while not fully understanding himself, he does figure out instantly that this is the Avatar, & Bolin convinces him to let them help her out, & the three continue on with what is the boys' backstory in the show as it is. It remains unknown if the Avatar survived, & frankly I don't know where I want this one at. Not the same as Aang's story, but still....

Either way, when Korra uses one of the other elements in a Probending match, Tenzin &/or Beifong overhears the broadcast, & Tenzin's the one to go over to the match itself & find out. He confronts Korra specifically upon their return to the locker rooms, the boys, Bolin particularly, get defensive about it, but almost as immediately realize this is what she needs. Her parents taught her Waterbending, & the boys both took care of her other elements, so all that's left at this point is indeed, Airbending. Bolin & Mako remain at the Probending arena apartment, while Korra lives with Tenzin.
This leaves an older brother/younger sister bond between Korra & Mako (erasing THAT problem <.<), & she bonds with Bolin on almost every level, & he does keep his crush on her the entire time. It doesn't initially begin until Probending, I think, because of that being when the whole hormones thing kicks in, or pretty close.

They don't get together until shortly after Tarrlok kidnaps her, but that same episode has BOLIN as the one to freak out & run after her, everyone else, including Mako the same. This panic DOES trigger his Metalbending for the first time, & as Beifong witnesses the entire event for herself, eventually decides to train him by the time of the 6 months inbetween seasons 1 & 2.

So their daughter is an Earthbender (green eyes), what is their son? I see what appears to be red eyes, but Korra is also wearing red. I assumed at first it was just artist coloration, but I feel more like it's literal now, which I have no qualms with, but their son looks a lot like Mako, and he has red/orange eyes, making him a Fire Bender.
And I agree - Bolin is going to be a future Metalbender, I just hope he aspires to an even greater cause than being part of the task force. I'd love to see Bolin go off an become a great warrior of some kind - an Earthbender who becomes widely renown for more reasons than pro bending (I simply say this because Season 2 is suppose to take place half in Republic City, half in the rest of the world... I want to know what happens! >.<)
