The real fanarts are the ones where you let your own art influence the picture, and not just copy it

I think it's admirable that you didn't end up copying CLAMP's style. They have such a distinct style, it's kind of hard NOT to when drawing some of their characters.

I have to admit I worry about the copying thing myself, though...My style is very obviously CLAMP-influenced...I try to make my art distinct, but I worry that people will accuse me of being a thief or just a lazy copier...

don't worry, i get the same way. it's really hard to do fanart, because it's so easy to just copy the style. it's much harder to stray from the style, because you venture into territory where people might not know who you're drawing >>;;
but i guess the beauty of fanart, or at least what i love, is seeing everyone's different takes on the same characters. :3

Good point. I've heard different arguments for and against fanart, with many people (usually more mature artists) saying that fanart is unoriginal. I disagree (although I do wonder about the people who draw nothing else). I think fanart can be like original art--it's can suck or be incredibly good--it just depends on the artist.
I'll have to do some fan art of a distinct character in my own style, as an exercise...

there are people against fanart? x_x; i feel stupid. i guess i should have known.. there are people against everything.
i don't get that. i suppose if you copy characters and the usual poses and such, then that's pretty unoriginal. but i think most fanart is more of a tribute to a character/series/artist. same with fanfiction.
